I have been excommunicated, and am finding my way through the wilderness back to the church. Recently a friend who is AOG told me that maybe by my excommunication, God is trying to push me towards another church or denomination ? I would like to listen to what others have to say about this comment, as Im really confuessed…

You’ve been excommunicated from the Catholic Church. There is only one true Church- The Catholic Church. God is not trying to push you towards another religion. That’s illogical, as the Catholic Church is the Church founded by Jesus 2000 years ago. Your excommunication is a disciplinary tool used by the Church as a wake-up call cutting you off from its sacrament as a means to bring you back into full communion. Satan in the one who is trying to use the Excommunication to lure you away from the one true Church. You need to speak to a priest about your excommunication and returning to full communion. If meeting in person is not your thing, you can meet with him through the Confessional. Be advised that depending on what you were excommunicated for, he might not have the faculties to lift the excommunication and absolve you that moment. You might have to come back once he receives the permissions he needs. Don’t worry, it’s all done in such a way that the seal is steal protected.

Are you sure about that? Excommunication involves some very specific actions. Lots of people have misconceptions about excommunication.

That advice is very much due to the AOG friend not knowing what they are talking about. The entire purpose of excommunication is to impress upon the person the seriousness of their situation and to encourage repentance and reconcilliation.

Please go see your priest in the sacrament of Reconciliation. There is no sin you can commit that cannot be forgiven.

Talk to a priest. Excommunication is serious, but it is not permanent. You’re being reminded that something serious happened and needs correction.

Look at what happened to David with Bathsheba. He had Bathsheba’s husband killed and took her as his wife. God punished him by striking down their firstborn child. Pretty serious, eh? But David repented, and went on to be blest by God and even wrote the Psalms which are still the staple prayers of Christians and Jews. God desired David’s conversion, not his exclusion.

Same here. Seek reconciliation today.

Yep , Im sure that I have been excommunicated even had a priest confirm my actions have led to this…

I understand that my priest can forgive me but I can never forgive myself… I wish I could change things but I cant … I tried to talk to a priest but I couldnt speak cause I felt so unworthy of even being in his prescence…

You are not an ex-Catholic, you are a Catholic. No matter what. God loves you. There is no sin so terrible it cannot be forgiven. Also please know that while certain acts are excommunicable offenses, there are certain criteria that must also be met-- age, full knowledge, and free will all enter into the equation. One is not necessarily excommunicated even if one commits an offense listed as excommunicable.

If you are suffering from an abortion, PLEASE get post abortion counseling and healing. You are a child of God, he loves you, and you ARE worthy. Please contact Rachel’s Vineyard or Project Rachel, or the pro life ministry in your diocese. They can help you.

We are much harder on ourselves than God is.

You made a mistake, whatever it is/was, you’re sorry, and want forgiven. That is what God wants too.

Confess it, be absolved, then you can work on forgiving yourself.

Some things are hard to let go of, but it can be done.

Are you sincerely sorry for whatever it was you did that caused the excommunication? You need to read the Catechism the the Catholic Church.

No sin is unforgiveable, the real question is do we have the proper dispositions to make a good confession. Read the part on Penance and Converson and Reconcilliation. Once you are satisfied about your sorrow seek out an understanding priest and go to confession - leave nothing out, then leave it in his hands.

Nothing is unforgivable. It is hard being without the sacraments. I would set up a confession with a priest and take the necessary steps to be in communion with the Church again. If we are talking about an abortion, most bishops now allow a priest to absolve that sin with a confession.

There are differing degrees of discipline in the Church, excommunication being the worst. Even an excommunicated Catholic may attend Mass, in fact it is recommended, in order that at some point the excommunicated person recognizes his/her mistakes, repents and returns.
One of the misunderstood things about excommunication (especially thanks to the mainstream media) is that excommunication is really an act of mercy. If you are receiving the sacraments in a state of mortal sin you are committing sacrilege; excommunication prevents you from digging your hole deeper, so to speak.
If yours is a private sin, and you were excommunicated discreetly, your return will be just as discreet. If your sin is very public, such as defying Church law publicly (as so many of our politicians do), and you were publicly excommunicated (as in being announced in the papers, or a public announcement was made by the Church), your repentance and return (it used to be that way anyway, not 100% sure now) needs to be public, so that no one is scandalized by seeing you receive the sacraments without knowing for sure if you have been reconciled to the Church and her laws, and it’s better that you publicly renounce your sin (but again, this is all according to the particular circumstance of the excommunication).
It is vitally important that you forgive yourself - if you don’t, Satan still has a hold on you. God’s mercy and love is greater than your sin - please don’t commit the sin of Judas and despair, because sin cannot hold a truly repentant soul. Remember that when St Paul complained of the thorn in his side and his weakness, Jesus reminded him that “My grace is sufficient for thee.” This kept St Paul humble - remember that St Paul was just as human as the rest of us, and I’m quite sure that he thought about, from time to time, the things he did. Confessed sin God forgets, but for us to remember the things we’ve done doesn’t mean we haven’t really repented; if we confess them in true sorrow for them we are absolved, but remembering them tends to keep us humble.
Here is a link that describes the different disciplines:

Can you please give us the reason(s) why you were excommunicated so that we can help you find your way back into the church? By not knowing the circumstances, it is hard to provide constructive and helpful information. I realize that it could be a delicate subject but even having the subject can also help us help you.

I think it’s wonderful that you took a chance to ask your question because God loves you and maybe by even asking your question, it could help you find your way home.

Keep asking your questions. Remember God is loving, caring and yes even bewildering as well. Asking questions also brings us closer to God.

Remember, there is no Saint without a past, and no sinner without a future.

God The Father welcomes you back… He wants you back in the family of The Church founded by his Son… Talk to a priest… You have shown courage by speaking on here… continue doing this by speaking to a priest under the seal of Confession… You are the Prodical Daughter!!! 😃

**Dear Chinamoon,

You do not need to share with any CAF the reasons for your excommunication.** If you believe in your heart that this is so - none of us at CAF have any right to know why.

Since you have stated that you are excommincated please seek out a priest that you trust. That is the only valid advise anyone at CAF offers.

I will pray that you have one such priest in your life. If you do not - please either PM me with your location - or call the Chancery at your Diocese and you can - without identifying yourself - ask for a name.

Please - do not feel you have to bare your soul on this media outlet. I promise prayers for you and know the sincere desire of your soul to be united with the Church.

Prayers.

Well said!!

When, as a child, we do something that makes our mum unhappy with us and she sends us to our room, is that a sign that we must look for a new mother?

Excommunication is a communication from the Church to you that what you did was serious and you cannot receive the sacraments before you repent. The priest won’t forgive you, the Lord will, the priest will just be someone who accompanies you at this event and pronounces the words of God’s forgiveness.

As another poster has said, a priest may not have the authority to lift the excommunication immediately in every case. Nevertheless, you must talk to a priest and it would be better before long so you can stop worrying. I would call the parish office and make an appointment where you can speak to a priest face to face in a quiet environment rather than in a confessional where people are queueing behind you. Even if this first talk does not end up as a confession, what you say will be kept in confidence.

God bless.
