Hello,

Some anonymous benefactor recently donated four tapestries to my parish which are now hanging on both sides of the nave. The artwork is very abstract but beautiful nonetheless. My pastor says the four tapestries depict Creation, Birth, Fire and Water – all relating to the Easter Vigil. Creation and Birth I can understand, but not Fire and Water. How are Fire and Water Catholic symbols/elements?

unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit he shall not have eternal life
water and fire
baptism and confirmation
read the 1st chapter of Genesis

also look at the OT readings for the Easter Vigil which have at least one of these elements as a feature

Here’s just a few obvious examples from the Easter Vigil iteslf

Fire: The blessed fire at the Easter Vigil. The Pascal candle. Anticipating the Tongues of Flame at Pentecost.

Water: Baptism, Exodus, Christ as the Font of Life, the blood and water from the side of Christ on the cross, blessing and sprinkling with that water at the Vigil.
