It is part of the consecration of the altar, and thus it is not a “fire in front of the tabernacle” so much as a “fire on the altar, which just happens to have a tabernacle behind it in this instance.” The Catholic Encyclopedia explains:
The consecrator then blesses the incense and sprinkles it with holy water. Then he forms it into five crosses, each consisting of five grains, on the table of the altar, in the middle and at the four corners. Over each cross of incense he places a cross made of thin wax taper. The ends of each cross are lighted and with them the incense is burned an consumed. This ceremony symbolizes the true sacrifice which is thereafter to be offered on the altar; and it indicates that our prayers must be fervent and animated by true and lively faith if they are to be acceptable to God and efficacious against our spiritual enemies.
 
I learned a lot from scripture songs and just reading/studying the scriptures over the last 40 years…I had a powerful conversion experience at the age of 21 and got into the scriptures pretty faithfully. I am over 60 now and am still amazed at all the scripture that comes to my mind when I’m going through something or encouraging someone else… I’ve had three pretty rough head traumas over the years that affected my memory but I am amazed at all the scripture my mind retains…May the Lord bless and guide you as you get into His word. Nothing wrong with studying and committing His words to memory.
 
Recall in the Old Testament, in the wilderness tabernacle and then later in the Jerusalem temple, there was a candelabra (menorah) that was constantly burning outside the Holy of Holies.

The menorah resembles the burning bush from which God spoke to Moses. The menorah was a symbol of God’s presence even after the Sinai event.

If nothing else, there is at least a parallel between the modern day sanctuary candle and the menorah burning outside the Holy of Holies.
