how does one show love to God? how is it possible to put God first in life with duties of being a souse, parent, worker, student, and whatever else we have going on through the day?

The Cathecism in part says about the first commandment:

**2086 **"The first commandment embraces faith, hope, and charity. When we say ‘God’ we confess a constant, unchangeable being, always the same, faithful and just, without any evil. It follows that we must necessarily accept his words and have complete faith in him and acknowledge his authority. He is almighty, merciful, and infinitely beneficent. Who could not place all hope in him? Who could not love him when contemplating the treasures of goodness and love he has poured out on us.

For me that means that as my day begins I take a moment to Thank God first of all for the day ahead and trust him for whatever is in store for me through out the day. My hope is in him.

The CCC goes in depth at explaining the first commandment and how it applies to us in our walk of faith.

Another, equally important way of serving the first communion, could be seen in the opposite, that is, we must have no other false “gods” in our lives, e.g. lots of money, fast cars, etc.

Forgive me but I couldn’t help laughing. I assume you mean spouse and not souse which is something quite different.

you may have lots of money, you may not put that money before God { Job was quite wealthy } - you may have a fast car { you just need to drive it under control and within the limits prescribed by local authorities and in compliance with the 5th commandment.}

By living faithfully to our marital vows and loving our spouse, children, etc, we can not help but obey the first commandment.

I agree with markadm, in that we can not put other “gods” or people for that matter before God. First part of the greatest commandment; Hear, O Israel, I AM the Lord, your God…

Understanding, believing that God is God, who guides our lives if we come to Him with faith - The covenant: I will be your God and you will be my people.

Thou shalt have no other gods before Me. Sometimes in life, as Christopher West is fond of saying, we hang our coat on a hook that just can not support the weight. A spouse or a child is just that, they are not God, they are subject to human emotions and faults. In the end, a human can not give us the fulfillment of life. Marriage is but a shadow of the joy that awaits those who call on the name of God. Great mystery. Pray. Seek. Knock.
