In my parish in previous years I have witnessed first communicants up around the altar. I am looking for a reference as to why that is inappropriate that I can show to my DRE.
I guess I need to do some homework. I don’t know whom I should approach first. I was going to talk to the DRE first because my son will be making his first communion with the RE class. Also, we have a new priest since last spring’s first communions.
If they gather around the altar, they are in the sanctuary. According to the 2002 General Instruction of the Roman Missal:
"II. Arrangement of the Sanctuary for the Sacred Synaxis
(Eucharistic Assembly)
“295. The sanctuary is the place where the altar stands, where the word of God is proclaimed, and where the priest, the deacon, and the other ministers exercise their offices. It should suitably be marked off from the body of the church either by its being somewhat elevated or by a particular structure and ornamentation. It should, however, be large enough to allow the Eucharist to be celebrated properly and easily seen.[Footnote 115. Cf. Sacred Congregation of Rites, Instruction Inter Oecumenici, on the orderly carrying out of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 26 September 1964, no. 91: AAS 56 (1964), p. 898.]”
