My daughter will be celebrating her first communion in May. We just found out a month ago that she has a BUNCH of allergies. Her list includes all grains (even rice), dairy, nuts, soy, eggs, and the list goes on. She also is intolerant to grapes, although not as severely as the rest of the allergies.

What are her alternatives for receiving her first communion?

Thanks!

Talk to her doctor and to your pastor. Your pastor may be able to obtain low-gluten hosts (I think the gluten in wheat is the source of most allergy problems), or she may be able to take a tiny sip of the Precious Blood from the chalice. (You may want to let her taste a tiny sip of unconsecrated wine before the “big day” so she will not be surprised by the taste.)

And be sure to explain to her that, whether she receives only the Host or only from the chalice, Jesus’ Body and Blood are both completely present in either form. (The Host is both Body and Blood; the consecrated wine is both Body and Blood.)

It may be possible for your pastor to arrange for her to receive only a drop of the Precious Blood via a small gold or silver tube.

Right, speak with the doctor and then the priest when you know just how much wheat or gluten she may ingest. The alternative is to ask for her to be allowed to receive from the cup if the doctor thinks it won’t be a problem. This will need to be pre-arranged so be sure to let the priest and her teacher know ahead of time .

Can you tell us more about this? I’ve never heard of such a thing before.
