First communion confirmation question

I was baptized Catholic but never had a First Communion or Confirmation.

I am in RCIA in the process of being Confirmed.

Does anyone know if I have to have my First Communion before I am Confirmed, or can I just be Confirmed?

No one (in RCIA) has mentioned anything about First Communion.

In our parish everyone in RCIA falls into one of three categories. The Catechumate or un-baptized, the Candidate, a convert from another Christian denomination, and the Cradle Catholic who was baptized but did not receive one or both of the other sacraments of initiation.

In our parish, everyone is baptized, receives first communion and confirmation at the same time on Holy Saturday. The only exception to this are the children under age 7 of parents entering the Church who receive infant baptism.

The traditional sacrament order is baptism, confirmation and communion.

There is an exception to that rule for children baptized as infants, who are raised in the faith, they receive communion before confirmation. This exception has been only around for 100 years or so, in the 19th century, children didn’t receive 1st Holy communion until they were teenagers and received confirmation at age 7 or so.

But for adults in RCIA, the traditional order is used.

You will complete your initiation with the reception of the remaining two Sacraments. You will be Confirmed and then receive your First Holy Communion at the same Mass. Remember because you were already Baptized you must seriously consider the need for Confession before receiving any other Sacraments.

If you were in this diocese you would prepare for first communion and Confirmation, and celebrate both sacraments in the same Mass. You would also be prepared for your first confession and make it sometime before this ceremony. Be sure your catechist and director know what sacraments you need. You should be required to furnish a recent baptismal certificate (issued w/i the last 6 months) showing all sacraments received, so they should know this already.

I expect that Confirmation will be conferred during a mass. You will then receive communion at that mass, which will automatically be your First Communion. They probably didn’t see a need to stress that.

Sometimes we get wrapped up in the program and forget to mention all the details. Or we do mention it once and it is missed by the student. One has to remember that it is all new to the student, and repeat things until they are clear.

I have recently completed my first Reconciliation. In my diocese, Adult Confirmation occurs on Pentecost. Adult Baptisms take place on Holy Saturday.

Joe, I feel that sometimes the details are given less emphasis than the program, and that what has been confusing to me.
