First communion/confirmation rosaries?

I’m just wondering - I see a lot of people talking about first communion or confirmation rosaries…is there any specific meaning here, or just a tradition that’s come about? If there is, does anyone know where it came from?
 
It’s just been considered an appropriate gift to give someone on these occasions.

Agreed. What is more appropriate to give to someone who is becoming a soldier of CHRIST, than a Gun that will give the devil some really nasty headaches (holy Rosary) 😃

I still have my First Communion Rosary from many years ago. A friend of my mother’s made me a beautiful ceramic case for it that I keep it in. I did not get one for Confirmation though. I did give a Rosary to my godchildren when they received all 3 sacraments of initiation at Easter Vigil. I believe its an appropriate Catholic gift.

A First Communion Rosary will have a Chalice as the center piece. A Confirmation Rosary will have a dove on its center piece.

Simply put, they look different because they don’t have the normal center piece.

Correct. Rosaries that are labelled specifically for First Holy Communion, Confirmation or Wedding/Matrimony have special centers (and sometimes have special “Paters” - the Our Father beads (the beads between the 10 Hail Mary beads))
 
My grandmother gave both my sister and I rosaries for our first communion. We were a little late in receiving our first, so we received together.

It was a wonderful gift.
 
Rosaries can be made with any kind of materials, as long as they have some form of bead or beadlike object (no matter what it’s made of, or the shape), and don’t even have to have a crucifix on them, in fact. The centerpiece medal, likewise (if you even have one) can be anything.

So like some others said, some people like to make or buy rosaries with a symbol in the centerpiece that serves to honor or remind of the first communion or rosary - i.e. a chalice and host symbol, or holy spirit, etc.

It’s not an actual different kind of rosary.
