Greetings folks,
How do those of you that have different beliefs from your spouse, partner etc and that have kids handle communion with the children? I have a niece that was recently baptized as a Baptist/charismatic (believer’s chapel) and she has a 7 or 8 year old daughter that goes to church functions with her and also goes to catholic mass with one of her grandmothers. The grandmother is not my niece’s mother but her ex boyfriend’s mother and the father of the child. The little girl has recently completed her first communion in the catholic tradition. How do you explain the difference in your beliefs about communion if you do have different traditions? I can only imagine if the subject came up(and would think it probably would) that it would be very confusing to be told by one adult (grandmother) that it is actually Jesus and by another(mother) that it is only a symbol. Thank you for any thoughts on this. Peace and be well.

I had this conversation with my nephew who is in a Church of Christ. He had so much difficulty with the idea, he assumed that I misspoke. When I finished explaining to Him about Jesus’ exact words at the last supper, real presence, body, blood, soul, divinity, he looks over to his grandmother and said, ‘‘Is she punking me?’’

I don’t know if he will ever accept our beliefs, but at least he no longer thinks I’m kidding.

This is actually the bottom line of why Catholics cannot receive Communion at other services and vice versa. For a Catholic to receive Communion at a Baptist service is to imply a unity that is not yet there.
Baptists very much talk about following scripture, yet overlook John 6:52-59, in which Jesus talks about being “the Bread come down from heaven.” and how those who eat His Flesh and drink His blood have eternal life. Jesus just let the crowds listening to Him walk away. He does not try to explain His words as He did when speaking a parable.
Move forward to the Last Supper and Jesus says, “This is my Body which is to be given for salvation all men” and raising the chalice, “This is my Blood which is to be shed.”
Jesus did not mince his words.

Thank you both for your (name removed by moderator)ut. Take care.
