First Communion gift ideas?

My 7 y.o. nephew will be receiving his first Communion, soon. DW and I are trying to figure out the most appropriate gift for him and suspect he already has more than enough rosaries, children’s Bibles and figurines. Actually, if there is something that he would get frequent use out of (that isn’t any of the above), that would be most appealing. We’re even beginning to consider a t-shirt or mug. :o

Any ideas would be appreciated.

The children’s book The Squire And The Scroll. It’s Catholic, appeals to boys and discusses in a fairytale way the importance of purity and how to remain pure (ex. Shield your eyes, close your ears to the negative messages, etc.). Maybe a holy water font for his room too.
 
A nice small 5x7 leather bound no lines empty journal. Amazon has one with handmade paper and a leather strap closure. Explain to him that as he grows in the faith that he will come across different prayers, psalms, and scripture passages that seem to call to him. He should write those in the journal. It also is a great place to keep various prayer cards that he may receive over time. (These also work as great bookmarks) As time goes on he will have a beautiful prayer book to reflect on. This is also a great gift for someone making their confirmation.
 
I know that the tradition is for religious gift items for first communion. I would avoid thinking much in terms of things, except for books.

Remember that the best thing that you and his parents can do for him is to 1. see that he gets to Mass weekly, and 2. see that he gets a good religious education, and 3. develops a love of reading, and 4. see that he has clean and healthy recreation and entertainment.

A photo frame and make sure to take a photo of him on the special day to put in the frame. I still have a photo of me from my First Communion, framed and on our mantel along side my daughter’s, a photo of her baptism, my husband’s First Communion and Confirmation,etc, etc.

My kids love that book but I don’t think he’s ever read it. Come to think of it, I received a copy of “The Giving Tree” at my first Communion. (I don’t think it’s particularly Catholic - the point where the scroll turns into a sword seems inspired by Evangelicalism - but the lesson is compatible. We also have a copy of “The Princess and the Kiss”).

After I wrote the OP, DW and I decided to search Etsy for ideas and found something there. We might get him the book, too.
