My Godson is making his first Communion in two weeks. He already has a necklace of the Cross. Any suggestions for another gift? This is difficult!

Does he have his own Bible? Or you might consider a nice plaque with his name and the date of his First Communion on it that has a place for a photo so that it can be displayed with pride!

My nephew made his FHC yesterday. Money is always good - parents usually get the keepsake stuff (at least in my experience).

A statue of your godson’s namesake saint (or personal favorite!)

A small desktop crucifix (my son loves his!)

Age-appropriate books or videos on lives of the saints or other Catholic stories.

But since this is your godson, try this: is there a religious shrine near where you live? Make a “field trip” type of day. Plan a visit and either pack a lunch or go out someplace nice and just spend the time together. Time is the greatest gift we can give our young people!

Since this is your Godson and you are to help with his spiritual growth, I’d suggest putting together a small ‘book’ with Bible verses that explain / defend the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation and the Holy Eucharist. Knowing these verses and the sacraments they relate to will help him as he grows older and has to defend his faith from Scripture. If you scrapbook you can do it ‘scrapbook’ style (but do it ‘grown-up’ enough so he’ll want it 5 years from now…), or simply buy a small, empty journal, write the verses in your own hand-writing with a personal note included. You can tell him to use the rest of the journal to record his favorite verses as he grows older and learns more about his faith.

When I received my First Communion several years ago, my parents got me this nice little boxed set of a Rosary in its own little case, a scapular, and a Missal. I still have all three, and use the Rosary from time to time.

My uncle, who is a preist in NJ, and my aunt, who is a nun, sent me a small statue of Christ and a beautiful Rosary made of faceted glass beads with a rather large crucifix on it. Sadly, the Rosary fell apart over the years, and I’m still finding the pieces.

Hope this helps.

My Godson had his 1st Holy Communion last week. I bought him a San Damiano Crucifix necklace and what I think is a good book for children called Praying In The Presence Of Our Lord for Children by Fr. Antoine Thomas and Fr. Benedict Groeschel. It is a combination of Scripture & writings of the Saints. It tells you HOW and WHY to Pray: before the Eucharist, at Mass, The Our Father, The Rosary, using the Psalms, praying for others and throughout the day. I bought my Great-Niece a copy for her 1st Holy Communion this weekend & also a Rosary Bracelet. There are many books available for this age group and I think it makes a good gift.
