First Communion Preparation?

Just moved to a foreign country, and have no language skills yet. I have an 8-year-old who should make her First Holy Communion next spring. We found a nearby parish for mass (although we aren’t getting much from the service just yet…) and I suppose they have a Religious Ed program, but she won’t understand a word they’re saying! Is it possible to “Home School” a child to prepare them for 1st Communion? If so, where can I get the curriculum and materials required?

yes it is possible, speak to the DRE or to the pastor if she is not cooperative. you will probably still have to attend the parent meetings, a good thing, since it will help you prepare your child. I would encourage you still to let her enroll and get to know the other children, whom she probably also knows from public school. Socializing comes before language, but it will help her language skills. She needs to feel welcome esp. in her parish community.

Your DRE may be able to find bilingual materials for you, if not in your diocese from catechetical office of a large Diocese like Galveston Houston that serves many language and ethnic groups. Using them will help your child learn and help her new language development as well.

If it seems the group you represent is growing in your area, the parish and diocese should respond by offering catechetical and sacramental resources, not to mention liturgy, in your language.

It is absolutely possible! I am doing it now for our 5.5yo son who is developmentally delayed.

He has just started Jr Kindergarten at a Catholic school, but he seems very spiritually attuned so I do not wish to wait until he’s in grade 2.

We are using the St. Joseph Baltimore Catechism book, as it is very simple. It is working well.

You will need to get the pastor on board though, as he will need to hear her Confession and administer the sacrament.
