First Communion - Shy

I have done my first confession and am OK with getting a blessing because i feel in am company - i am just one of the communion crowd of brothers and sisters

i am nervous however about what to expect at first communion , at what is going to happen as being the centre of attention freaks me out (do i have to give a speech / organise a reception - i have never celebrated birthdays etc so this would be tough)

In April i think , God willing i will be confirmed , but assume (please correct me if i’m wrong) this will be done with quite a few other people , so the attention will be shared

In all likelyhood you will be recieved into the Church at the Easter Vigil along with all the other people in your RCIA class.

God will give you the grace, focus only on HIM.

As far as a reception, the Parish should have a little somthing for all those who come into the Church, you get to be a guest of honor

you most likely will receive communion in line with the rest of the parishioners so will not have to be standing up alone in front of people. If any aspect of this is causing you concern, be sure to speak to your catechist so she can help you be comfortable with it. Not every parish has a reception for the newly received, that is a local custom, so ask your catechists what to expect, what to wear etc. Make sure they practice with you, that does more than anything to lessen nervousness.

(Thank you for both your kind replies - sound advice, i am having instruction at moment so will probably cover it with my priest - and then feel more confident)

So far the Holy Spirit has not led me to do anything i couldn’t handle!

I am enjoying the singing of Hymns , the praying , the readings , the Rosary - it is all definitely helping build my faith . Although i have been away 40 years (i was about seven years old when i left) it feels familiar - i am pleased to have come back to the Catholic church

Tony, it seems you are approaching the Church just as Jesus desires - as a child with complete trust. Don’t worry about the eyes watching you receive the Eucharist, just think of the One you are receiving.

Don’t worry about being the center of attention.

You won’t be, trust me.
