First communion

Although I grew up Catholic, I went to another Church for a few months, but then quickly returned to the Catholic faith. But when at that other Church, I ate bread and drank the wine. That was a non-denominational Church, non-Catholic.

So question: Did I recieve my First Communion, or was it illegitimate because it was non-Catholic?

Edit: I’m a young teen, so I never received communion within the Catholic Church. I am planning on it though.

No priest and no Mass, ergo no valid consecration, no True Presence, ergo no First Holy Communion. You had communion with a small “c”, and it was not legitimate for you to do that, since you are in communion with the Catholic Church by virtue of your baptism.

You seem to have a lot of good but very basic questions. I would encourage you to get yourself a copy of the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It is meant as an entry-level introduction to the Catechism. You can buy a hard copy, or you can read it for free online at the Vatican’s web site:

Go to confession and then ask about first communion. Since you are in your teens, there may be more to it than that. Talk with your priest after confession. (Don’t do it in during confession!!), it may be that a true confession is all that is needed. Also ask about getting confirmed. You aren’t far away, come on in out of the rain.

Talk to: your parents, and then your priest, in that order. You did not receive the Eucharist in the non-denomination church because the bread and wine were not consecrated and did not become the Body and Blood of Christ. But you need to discuss this with your parents so they can help you prepare for your classes for First Eucharist.

I am going to assume that you were baptized in the Catholic Church. So you just need to catch up with your sacraments.
