We are invited to celebrate our Goddaughters first communion at another parish. Is it common practice to have a full Mass for an irregular celebration of first communion? I’m trying to decide if we need to goto our normal Mass (with two tottlers) drive an hour and goto another mass after.

I might have asked this before, but nothing sank in:
Why is first communion before confirmation?
 
I am confused. What is an “irregular celebration of first communion”? 🤷

First Communion should be celebrated in the context of Mass, so I am not sure why you think you’d have to go to Mass twice.

As far as Confirmation before First Communion- that’s a whole thread in itself. 😛

Irregular: normal mass is offered at 7:00 am, 8:30, 10:00, & 11:30. This will be held at 2:00 pm today.

Since the first part of this question is more personal than the second part ( first communion before confirmation) the second part of this thread should probably be the focus. Thanks.
 
it will probably count for Sunday Mass. When my brother’s two older girls received their first communions (different years), it was celebrated during an afternoon Mass on Divine Mercy Sunday.

I don’t know why you would call it an “irregular mass”. It is simply an additional mass.

This is very common when there are a large number of first communicants. There is nothing irregular or unusual about it.

And being at 2 p.m. on Sunday, it most certainly fulfills the obligation.

Pope Pius X lowered the age for reception of HC in 1910 to about the age of reason. Bishops conferences set the age of Confirmation, and most have it set at a higher age. Some individual bishops have lowered it and restored the order.

Bottom line: bishop’s decision.
 
How can you have First Communion without a full Mass? :confused: If you are asking if the First Communion Mass will meet your Sunday obligation, I pretty sure it will.
 
Yes, it will definitely count. A Mass is a Mass. Our normal Sunday EF Mass is celebrated either at 4 or 5 pm on Sunday. We are stuck with that time as we are “hosted” by an OF only parish. Our rental contract is set for a while (until the Abp finds it in his heart to give us a church of our own).

May is a great month for First Communion. Its Mary’s month.
 
While both First Holy Eucharist and Confirmation are sacraments of “initiation”, bishops get to decide the timing. Actually, it is highly unusual, in my experience, for First Communion NOT to be administered before Confirmation. (In the Eastern Catholic Church they are often administered together, in infancy, but that’s another thread entirely…)

Canon Law speaks to Masses fulfilling the Sunday obligation:

Can. 1248 §1. A person who assists at a Mass celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite either on the feast day itself or in the evening of the preceding day satisfies the obligation of participating in the Mass.

ANY Mass of any type (scheduled parish Mass, First Eucharist, Confirmation Mass, Nuptial Mass…) fulfills the obligation if it falls within the time parameters.

There has to be a Mass in order for the kids to make their First Holy Communion and yes it will fulfill your Sunday obligation. All todo for nothing. Go and enjoy the day with her. God Bless, Memaw
P/S. I love the Rocky Mountains, I lived out there for nearly 20 years and I think we covered every inch of them. At least in Colo. and part of Wyoming.Grand Tetons, breathtaking.
