First Communion

Hi, I am new to the Catholic Religion and traditions. I was raised Lutheran but my husband and I are raising our children Catholic. My son has his first communion coming up and I am not really sure what is proper or not proper to do for this very important step in his faith. I know what we need to for the Mass but my questions are more for the luncheon we will have after. Do we serve certain foods? Do we get the godparents gifts? What do parents typically get for the child as a gift? Thanks for any and all information you can provide me so I can give my child the proper celebration.
 
Wow, its been many years since any of our kids recieved their First Communion. I do remember that each child was made to feel very special that day. They were given several gifts by us and grandparents and a few friends. A Rosary, a Scapular, a Bible. Perhaps a crucifix or one on a necklace.

The God parents were given “Thank you” cards. And I think we gave a small stipend to the priest. $10.00 to $20.00. (it depends on your finances and the "customs " at the parish)

Ask some folks at the parish for advise.
 
Generally there are no additional Godparents for First Communion. It would be nice if the Baptismal Godparents were there for the Mass though.
The parish likely will give them a gift of a missal or a white rosary…you can find out.
My older sister gave me a beautiful statue of the child Jesus in Mary’s lap for mine, which I kept on my dresser, and still have to this day.
You could give them a really good quality medal to mark the day. A miraculous medal would be great.
Ask the other parents in the class what they are giving and where they purchased them.
Just google “First Holy Communion gifts” and you’ll see oodles of things pop up. Shop around. Most places carry the same things, but at much different prices. If you live in an area with a lot of Catholics, any Catholic gift shop can help you.
I prefer that children receive things they will actually use, and not keepsakes that sit in a drawer forever.

No certain foods are required or served at the party after a First Communion, except maybe a cake! Religious gifts are traditional for the child, but no one else usually exchanges them. This is basically a family celebration so whatever your family does on such occasions is fine. Take lots of pictures. 😉
