First confession coming up ;)

I totally get what you guys are saying it didn’t make sense to me either since that is not the usual order.

Maybe i should have been alittle more clearer, Father knew that I was nervous and have anxiety about the whole confession thing, so in that regards he wants me to get comfortable with confession which is why he wants me to do them next week. I know it doesn’t make sense but that’s the best i can explain it. I Guess you could say it’s a “practice” confession if there is even a such thing. But i do know that he is trying to make me feel as comfortable as much as possible and get warmed up to the idea of attending confession. Makes sense?. He didn’t say i have to do it, if i want to oppose by all means i can.

In my RCIA group the baptized met with the priest to make their first confession and those of us that were unbaptized ( myself and my husband) met with him to discuss any last minute questions and also this was an opportunity to discuss with the priest any particular sins that may have been weighing on our souls. Even though we were not officially receiving the sacrament of reconciliation.

Officially? I have no idea, but by that point I’d met with him enough that I had no qualms about his discretion. Since we didn’t discuss any sins at that meeting it never crossed my mind to worry about. If I think back, I’d guess that our deacon and RCIA director would have told us if they would have been under the seal as this was an orthodox parish and they were good about giving us that type of information. I just don’t remember as it wasn’t upper most in my mind at the time. I do remember that the baptized had the choice of using the confessional or making first confession face to face. I did later make my first confession to that priest in the confessional about a month after I was baptized and confirmed.

I always find it interesting but a bit sad that may priests really do not have a clue about RCIA. We are always getting questions from priests on our diocesan RCIA team about what they are to do and not do. Some even separate the sacraments (which is not allowed). We have priests who make the baptized go through the rites for the unbaptized and we have priests, like the one in this situation, making the baptized go through a sacrament that they do not need and that really isn’t sacramental for them since they are not Christian. I think the seminary system just glosses over the RCIA and leaves the priests to find out on their own the details. Some of them end up in parishes with RCIA directors who know very little about the rites themselves so you have the blind leading the blind. All RCIA directors should be required to take a course in the RCIA and all priests should own a copy of the RCIA book and actually read it.
