First Confession Question about sexual sins

Well, the deed is done.

I feel great and even if he did know who I was, mainly because only two of us showed this morning, he didn’t act like he did. That made me feel much better. The rest of the group I assume are taking the penance service route. I’m glad I didn’t do that. It made me feel good that I conquered my fear of the confessional and chose my priest over someone at random.

I wrote everything down and burned it when I got home. I got a light penance but a fair one and some tips on helping to curb temptations that I still suffer from. I made sure and let him know where my weaknesses are as well. He told me I made a great examination of conscious and was very encouraging.

I used very specific language when telling him my sexual sins but kept in mind that I was speaking with a priest. Overall I am satisfied with my confession and now that the initial one is done, and I won’t have 21 years of terrible deeds to confess, the future ones will be much easier.

I lost alot of sleep over this but it wasn’t as bad as I thought. I am so ready for Easter!

Good for you and congratulations! The sacrament of reconciliation is such a great preparation for Easter!

Isn’t it a great deal? We give Jesus our sinfullness and sorrow and He gives us grace and mercy? So much more than what we deserve.

I’m glad yours went well - almost all do.

I am almost always nervous, but I always leave encouraged and glad that I went.

Onward to Easter!

I did my first confession today too. I was TERRIFIED when it was time to do it. I had thoughts of running away and leaving and all sorts of stuff, I even started to cry before I had it ( I was waiting on my priest to change clothes).
My priest was great though, he walked me through it, and even when I started to ball like a baby he was just patient and waited.
Is it normal to literally ‘feel’ something when he gives the absolution, cause I did?

I felt something too. As a matter of fact, as soon as I knew the absolution was coming I got a huge smile on my face.

I accidentally walked out without spending any time in the church praying because I was so happy that I forgot. I walked out and took a deep breath and I promise it felt like I haven’t breathed that deep in ages. I had to thank God and pray in the parking lot of Lowes after my mind caught up with what just happened.

I had waited for years to get some of those things off my chest.

LOL I didn’t go pray either. Actually I just remembered I was supposed to right when reading your response. I did my Confession and then went home to get the grandkids to go back to Mass, so I was kind of rushing. I prayed while driving back.
My grandkids got to experience their first ever Mass today too, so it was an uber cool day all the way around 🙂

Congratulations and good job to the OP!

I was going to reply that I loved Post #2: what a beautiful response, and quite fitting for all of us, no doubt!

While the priest may not have said so, the vast majority of them are humbled by honest announcement of sins (esp. embarrassing ones), and gain respect for such sinners, not repulsion toward them. They know darn well that they most likely have been guilty of sexual sins in the past, at one point or another in their lives (maybe even frequently). It was a grace (as now you know, OP) for you to have been repelled by your previous sins. That shows true contrition, true interest in amendment, and will result in effective graces.

We should always, when we confess any of our sins, reflect on how we ourselves respect other people’s honest acknowledgement of sins or faults. Most of us (I know I do) probably think, ‘Wow, what an honest person. I wish I could be that brave; maybe I should be and can be, too.’ (I don’t think: what a disgusting person!) Since priests are every bit as human as non-priests are, surely they are thinking along the same lines.

And again, remember that many of us have plenty of non-sexual sins that are as embarrasing for us to admit and to say, as other people’s sexual sins. I was ashamed to admit something in a recent confession; it is in keeping with my pride to assume that I am “above” such a sin, but I hardly was, and that’s the way I confessed it. (“I can’t believe that I’m having to confess this, and that I actually did this.”)

Welcome to the sacraments!

You have the sincere intentions of confessing whether you are using euphemisms or not, that’s what counts…your intentions are good therefore the end results are good…just my opinion only…

I was in a similar situation. I confessed my sin of Oral Sex as “Impure Acts” however I felt as if I really hadn’t really confessed and it was always on my mind bothering me for months.

Finally I went to confession before Corpus Christi Mass on Saturday evening and let it out. I just wanted to say what exactly it was without covering it up under a broad blanket.

The Priest was really helpful and provided giudance.

After leaving the confessional I just felt this freedom. After doing my pennance I felt at Communion time during Mass as if this was my First Communion and that I was receiving Jesus without wondering if I was still carrying around mortal sin on me.

I am truly appreciative of the Sacrament of Reconcilation. This is such a powerful Sacrament.

Your answers and discussion on Catholic.com forum was truly helpful in getting over my fear and facing the responsibility for my actions - thank you all. May you continue to be guided by the Holy Spirit.
