Hello,

I am in CCD as a baptized Christian and today is my first confession! My question is will I become a Catholic during confession since confession is only aloud for Catholics or ones repenting on their death bed? Plus, on Easter Vigil I will have my first communion and in may I will get confirmed.

God Bless

Congratulations! I don’t know the answer to your question, but I wanted to respond to tell you that I’m happy that you have worked things out with your pastor. I’m assuming that he doesn’t plan to make you wait another year?

Thank you! Nope! I forgot to mention that in the thread I apologize! I mentioned it in the RCIA 2012-2013 group.

God Bless 🙂

You become Catholic at your baptism.

Though in communion to Rome or not is another question.

WELCOME TO THE CHURCH!!! 😃

As long as You were baptized in a valid Christian Church, You come into full communion with the Church at Easter Vigil, on the other hand…

I’M SO HAPPY FOR YOU!!!

WELCOME HOME!!!

As a previously baptized non-Catholic Christian, you become officially Catholic at your Confirmation.

However, if you received a Catholic baptism, you are already Catholic.

As a baptized Christian seeking to become Catholic, I had to receive the sacraments in this order: Confession, Confirmation, and then Holy Communion. As I understand it, if I had been baptized as a Catholic instead, I would have received the other sacraments in a different order: Confession, First Holy Communion, and then Confirmation. Maybe that is just in my part of the world, though…

Thank you all! I have done my first confession and I feel so good 🙂

God Bless!

Congratulations! I’m also in RCIA and so excited about the Easter Vigil. See my post on what to expect. I will be going to reconciliation next week. Such an exciting time for us!

I am a cradle Catholic myself, so have never been through RCIA. But knowing my sacraments, the reason for them having you do Confession now is to try to make sure you don’t receive Confirmation or First Communion with unconfessed mortal sin.

What will make you a full Catholic is the sacrament of confirmation and the Eucharist. Confession prepares you for those sacraments. It cleans your soul and makes you ready to meet Jesus at Mass. Confession is intended for Catholics but still valid if a non-Catholic confesses and is absolved- though it would be awkward 🙂 Confession is for everybody at any time, I recommend going once a month but only once a year is required by the law of the Church. You will most likely be confirmed and receive communion at Easter Vigil- then your job is to continue on a journey of faith and grow in Christ as a new Catholic.

You actually become officially Catholic at the Easter Vigil during the renewal of baptismal vows and the profession of Faith. If you are baptized validly, then it is your declaration of the Catholic Faith that makes you Catholic. My 3 kids are Catholic and they have not been Confirmed. Confirmation doesn’t make you Catholic.

So, because it depends on your declaration, you are in a interesting situation as soon as you come to believe and Confess the Catholic Faith. For the sake of ceremony, preparation, and order, we postpone your official entrance until the Easter Vigil.

But, technically, anyone in RCIA who dies while in RCIA is considered to have died a Catholic. So, on a technicality you are already Catholic. But, you are postponing your official public commitment to the Church until the Vigil. RCIA has a long tradition and is the current norm, but there is nothing super set in stone about it. The Church could speed up the process for baptized converts if they wanted to, and I’m sure in some cases it has been done.

RCIA is also perhaps in its origin, more for those who are not baptized. Remember, it was over one thousand years before there were baptized Christians who weren’t Catholic that needed to become Catholic. Before that, if you weren’t catholic, you weren’t yet baptized, because there was no other Christian group to be. So, RCIA began as a process for the non-baptized. The non baptized don’t go to Confession before the Easter Vigil because Baptism forgives all sins.

So, to answer your question you are most likely already technically Catholic, but your’e waiting to making your public committeemen at the Vigil at which point you’ll also be receiving the sacrament of Confirmation and your first communion.

Congrats and welcome…fortunately it is getting close and the weird in between time warp state you are in is about to close!

Doctor of the Church, St Cyril of Jerusalem’s (ca. AD 313 – 386) catechesis to those who were to be baptized is wonderful.
