We are all unbaptised at the moment. This has been making me think quite a bit as when we started we were told that baptism is the gateway to all the sacraments but until that time we cannot take a part in any sacraments so this has come out of nowhere and has confused me very much as this confession cannot be valid until we have been baptised surely, which is what we were told at the start. As we are all unbaptised I cannot think why this is taking place.

Remember that you are not the only one who has had to do this for the first time.

Dont give up on God. God is so pleased that you have gotten this far.

If you have to make a list on a toilet roll the priest wont mind! Tell him first though.

I always take a list in with me.

You know, however anxious you get, however scared you are of your first confession remember that God wants you to commit to him and will work ‘through the priest’.

The priest has probably heard all the difficult to confess sins and he is there to absolve you. To bring Gods mercy and love on you.

The feeling you
get when you have been forgiven of all those sins is awesome! Nothing like it in the world.

God bless you
Great post. I’d just like to add that there’s nothing new under the sun, so you won’t be confessing anything new-the priest has heard it all before. Just do your best-if you have trouble the priest will help you. You will be so glad you went. 🙂

We have been told from the start that baptism is the start of new life, the water represents the washing away of all sin and life starts anew with that as all sin is washed away so this is a major contradiction it seems,it was made very clear from the start that ALL sacraments can only be given after baptism,I knew this already and was very clear on that so I am really confused about this sudden change.

Sorry to bring about a new set of worries, but I had to make sure they were teaching the right things at RCIA, which it seems they did, but apparently aren’t following through with them for whatever reason… 🤷

Of course I don’t mean to void any of the great advice everybody else has given on thread it all still applies to going to a first confession, I would simply find an appropriate document pertaining to the correct order of the Sacraments, show it to Father and ask why this sudden contradiction of what you were taught previously.

I was given some great advice yesterday which was to remember that my relationshio ultimately is with God which has helped me focus my mind but this sudden change which has been dropped on us has confused me when it was,and is clear as to the way things are done,I find it confusing but my wish is to worship God,be a good catholic and follow through with this as it has taken me many years to commit.Thank you to all for your advice,it is all very much appreciated.Any advice will help me move forward.

Have you spoken with Father? Perhaps you should call or email him. He may just be confused and not remembering that you have not yet been baptized. Priest these days have so much on their plates, it wouldn’t hurt to just remind him that you have never been baptized and ask why he is requiring confession, etc. I know that there are some things related to confirmation that are subject to pastoral discretion, but I wouldn’t imagine that this is one of them! .

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Our priest is very much aware of the fact that none of us are baptized as he regularly reminds us of the processes we will be going through and at mass currently we are having blessings so he is aware, which is why I am confused as he is so on top of everything and this is a sudden departure from our teachings.

Hi, I am due to do my first confession prior to the Easter vigil baptism.Where do I start,I have 44 years to think about and this is worrying me greatly. It has taken me 25 years to commit to God and I have attended every RCIA class since it started last year. This is worrying me enough to make me think twice,I have led a simple life really with all the troubles it brings but I just have no idea where to start with this.Any advice would be most welcome.
You do not have to confess every sin, just categorize it by the seven deadly sins, and give a rough idea as to kind and number. It’s obviously sketchy as it’s over 44 years, but that’s okay.

Plus, you’re being baptized! So that will cleanse all your sins anyway! = )

First, I want to say WELCOME HOME!! What a blessed journey you are on and it will only continue to get better and better.

If you’re being baptized you don’t need to go to confession before the Easter Vigil. Your baptism will wash away not only your sins but the stain of original sin. Perhaps he was speaking only of those who are already baptized as they do need to go to confession.

We we’re all told that but somehow our priest who is teaching us has dropped this on us and we are having to confess before baptism which I have found very strange but being new to this I don’t ask questions.
Thank you for you’re advice,it is so much appreciated and it is helping me with my fears.Thank you all.
No other sacrament can be validly received before baptism, so if you confess before, there is no absolution through the Church. But candidates for reception (that wish to) may make a first confession; they are already baptized.

Hi
May I just say WELCOME!!!
I was received five years ago.
First Confession is scary, but Confession becomes a treasure.
I confess (!) that I didn’t have reams of paper in front of me. I trust someone more experienced than myself will correct this if I am in error: I discussed the broad general areas of my sins, with some specifics that weighed particularly on my heart.
I did think of things at my next confession that I needed to get off my chest. Someone said that this wasn’t necessary as I had been absolved already. Maybe not but it sure seemed to me as if I NEEDED to say it out loud before God.
God Bless you. Enjoy it all! It is all about HIM loving US!
Keith
