I came out of the RCIA program last year as a catechumen last year and I have my first confession today. For me this was a really emotional night as I was releasing the burden of all the sins I somehow conjured up throughout the year. It is a shame I did it this late (but least I did it:) ), yet I’m still wondering, was your first confession that emotional?

Well, being that it will be your first, it’s perfectly normal that it be emotional. I’m sure other converts will tell similar stories (I’m a cradle Catholic).

Most of my confessions are very emotional, regardless of time between them or sins confessed. I recall Jesus’ words to St. Faustina, that He is there in the confessional waiting, and that the priest is just a “screen” for Him, that He wants to shower His mercy on us. That’s pretty powerful. ❤️

Congrats to you, welcome home, and here’s to many, many more emotional confessions! 😉 :hug1:

yes certainly it can be an emotional experience
that is good because it reminds us that conversion is an ongoing process, not a one-time event.
however, it is important to remember that feelings and emotions are not always good guides to the depth of the religious experience, the efficacy of the sacrament, or of spiritual growth.

I was 7 when I made my first confession so I really don’t remember it. All I know was it was dark.

I was raised Catholic, and had my first confession when I was a child, so I don’t really recall the very first. But after a long absence, my first time back in the confessional was amazing. There’s a great deal to be said for receiving the sacrament, rather than just asking God’s forgiveness on your own. As I was given absolution, it was like a HUGE boulder was lifted from my heart. I keep asking myself now why I put it off so long.

I maybe should have started a new thread but since my question is confession/reconcilliation related I thought it would be okay here.

I haven’t been to confession in over 10 years it may be closer to 15…I just know it has been so long I can’t remember. Anyway…
I don’t know what to do or say. Is it scripted or what? I have been putting it off for so long because I don’t know what to do. I know that I have been “told” through my prayers that I need to go. I am just so insecure about it. Any words of wisdom would be so very appreciated.

Most places I’ve been if you explain to the priest that it’s been a long time for you, they’ll sort of walk you through it. I seem to recall that once upon a time it started out with you making the sign of the cross and then “bless me Father for I have sinned…it’s been 15 years since my last confession and in that time I’ve done blah blah blah” I don’t think it has to be this formal though. You might also consider requesting an appointment so that you can take your time without worrying about anyone waiting in line behind you. One thing I will say, though, is if the Spirit is leading you to the sacrament, then GO!! I promise you won’t regret it! 👍

As a convert who has been to reconciliation a grand total of TWICE I’m not quite an authority on the topic, but here is a link to my friend’s blog post about examining your conscience and praying towards a good confession.

Thanks…the need to go to confession is great. I feel the weight bearing down on me with increasing pressure every day as Easter draws nearer. Jesus’ sacrifice for me is so great. I am ashamed that I don’t have the guts to go seek his forgivenss and love.

There is confession on Tuesday evening at my local church. I plan to go seek this sacrament. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers.

To have a nice, heartfelt confession during Holy Week is a wonderful thing to do. I did my “before Easter” confession today.

I had my first confession last August, and went again yesterday. Both were emotional, but the first was definitely much more so, probably because I was unloading 36 years of sin. It’s an awesomely powerful sacrament which I have no plan on neglecting. 🙂

The sacrament of reconciliation is wonderful gift. That pressure that you feel - that’s grace working in your life. Don’t turn your back on it.

Two places you might look for some encouragement: C’mon Back and Fr. Pat’s Reconciliation page.

You’ll be in my prayers. I’ve been in your shoes, and I was met with nothing but compassion and mercy.

I just want to thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. I am still apprehensive about going, but really? What’s the worst that can happen…I may just feel embarassed but I plan to tell Father that I haven’t been to confession for so long in part because I don’t know what I am supposed to do and I’d like him to help me walk through it. I think that he’ll just be happy that I am finally going to recieve this sacrament again.

I am going through this huge conversion in my life right now and I sure hope that someday when I look back on it it will be with humor. All along I thought I was a ‘good Catholic’…God has sure shown me that I have a lot of growing in grace to do.
Thanks again!

I just wanted to let you all know that I did it. And it was wonderful. I will not wait so very long to recieve it again. I was nervous and anxious up until I sat in the church and just prayed that God would lift me up and be my guide through the process. I needed his help to become closer to Him. It really was awesome.
So thanks for all of your words of encouragement and prayers I really don’t think I could have done it without it.

Thanks again
