Hello all,

My wife and I are going to check out our first EF Mass this Sunday. Is there anything I need to know? Can anyone suggest an online resource to look at ahead of time to get the order of Mass, etc?

Peace,

Sit near the middle, and just copy what others do. I think it would be better to go without knowing what to expect!

Peace,
Whilst receiving communion kneeling, at the rail, it is not expected of you to affirm ‘Amen’ just prior to receiving.

Learned this the hard way… I caught a look from the good father of the FSSP that seemed to say, ‘Ah, a noob.’ :o

Awesome Jason!

The church might have missalettes, but just in case they don’t:

Here are the mass propers for this Sunday:

And only if you have time before hand, but since I know you like to study, you can check out the Explanation of the Prayers and Ceremonies of Holy Mass.

Also thread has some good tips.

I was trying to find you a nice PDF missalette, but couldn’t find one.

Here is the order of the mass.

My recommendation: Watch the posted videos, scan the documents that are posted, but when you get there, try not to be too much into your missalette.

Let your eyes, ears and spirit prayerfully take in what is going on, follow everyone else and don’t forget your “et cum spiritu tuo”. 🙂

Great recommendations. Good work, TrueLight.

Hello. The following is about the most fantastic Low Mass video I’ve ever been able to find. It’s practically flawless. The rubrical training of the priest and the altar boy is basically immaculate.

The whole video is only 30ish minutes long. Low Masses usually are short. The other video in this thread isn’t of a Low Mass, it’s of a Missa Cantata, one step up from a Low Mass, and it’s different. So please watch this one for your practice:

I would love to have been at that mass.

Low Mass, physically at least, is very easy on the congregation. You kneel through most of it and you make no responses. You just make the physical gestures like the Sign of the Cross, striking your breast at the appropriate time, etc. You don’t have to remember to say anything because there isn’t anything to be said! At communion, just approach the rail, kneel, and stick out your tongue, incline your head up, and close your eyes when the priest is near. I really, really recommend “perfect tongue sticking-out” practice if you’ve never done it before. Stick your tongue out all the way and make it wide. It’s much easier on the priest that way.

Yeah, but if he is going to choose one mass to visit, I would choose the high mass.

There is only one EF Mass in town that I am aware of and it is only offered once a week so I guess I have to take whatever version they are offering. I will be curious to see how it goes.

Peace,

Well, we just got home from our first EF Mass. It was nice, but that was about it. I have read many of the statements on here about how much more reverent it is or that I wouldn’t hear people talking before Mass and that everyone pays attention, or the homilies are better, etc. From our first impression, none of that was any different.

Don’t get me wrong, the homily was good and the experience overall was nice. However, there were really loud people greeting each other and making small talk before Mass and there were far more people not paying attention to what was going on, many not even making the attempt to follow along with the Missal, than I typically see at our parish OF Mass.

All in all, I would not go back. I am not giving up on the EF Mass and am willing to give it a shot somewhere else in the future, but my first impression is that I would rather go to a well done OF Mass. My wife agrees completely.

Sorry if this bothers anyone but I wanted to give an honest assessment of my experience.

Just out of curiosity, was this an EF at a normally OF parish or was it at an EF only FSSP parish? Your experience seems a bit outside the normal, at least at our FSSP parish.

It was an EF at a normally OF parish though they have been celebrating the EF for some time now to my understanding.

I attend the EF at an EF/OF parish and they talk in the church proper as well too. Not much you can do to change that.

Agreed. My point was simply that many people on CAF seem to equate the EF of the Mass with people being respectful and reverent before, during, and afterwards. My first impression is that there is no relationship. Of course, this was one mass at one parish and just as the OF varies from place to place, I imagine the EF does as well. I am willing to give it another go.
