Saturday mass is “Vigil Mass,” so can going to mass on Saturday, in order to carry out the requirements for the First Five Saturdays Devotion, meet the obligation to attend on Sunday as well? I don’t imagine it could.

More generally, if you want to attend mass daily, how can you if Saturday mass is identical to Sunday’s?

Thanks, and God bless,

DH

So long as you go to the Vigil Mass, you fulfill both your obligation and the devotion.

Yes, receiving Communion at the Saturday evening vigil Mass CAN fulfill the First Saturday obligations, but I think that would only be the case if it weren’t possible to make it to a Saturday morning Mass (which is probably a common problem – a lot of parishes don’t even have Saturday morning Masses). Yet I do know that attending Mass on Saturday evening to fulfill the First Saturday really isn’t meant to serve as a “double dip” – that in that event you should go to Mass on Sunday as well.

Thanks for the reply (and thanks also to the first fellow who replied). My parish does not have a Saturday morning mass–hence the problem of “double dipping.” Hence also why I asked about attending daily: it would seem that it’s only really possible to receive communion six days out of the week if Sat and Sun masses are identical–but then I suppose they’re identical only insofar as the readings and homilies are concerned; the important thing is to receive communion.

I’m a recent convert, so I’m still getting the hang of all this!

I thought that in order to fulfill the requirements for the devotion you had to receive communion and confession within one week of the Saturday devotion. Is this not correct? I’ve been trying to do this since July, and it seems like the first Saturday or weekend in general we are out of town or have family/friend obligations that prevent me from going to Confession on Saturday and/or Mass on Sunday. This weekend is just another example because I will be out of town, and am not sure that I will be able to attend Mass. I planned on going to Confession tonight and either Mass tonight or early in the morning before we leave tomorrow.

Actually, it’s just confession that can be done within a week of the First Saturday of the month.
