Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is of great antiquity in the Church. It was St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, however, who made this devotion widespread. In 1675, within the octave of the feast of Corpus Christi, our Lord appeared to her and said: “Behold this heart which, not withstanding the burning love for men with which it is consumed and exhausted, meets with no other return from most Christians than sacrilege, contempt, indifference and ingratitude, even in the sacrament of my love [the Eucharist]. But what pierces my heart most deeply is that I am subjected to these insults by persons especially consecrated to my service.” (For more see HERE)

In the past, most heard the word “consecrated” to mean only those consecrated by the Sacraments of Holy Orders or Religious Profession, (i.e. priests and religious brothers and sisters), but today, I believe many lay people are beginning to realize they were anointed at Baptism and “consecrated” in a special way also. St. Louis de Montfort in the 1700’s, writing his treatise on “True Devotion” encouraged all God’s family – priests and people alike – to consecrate themselves to Jesus through Mary. He explained how total consecration can be a perfect renewal of our Baptismal Vows.

Today, if you cannot attend Mass and/or receive Holy Communion in the spirit of Reparation, you can offer your heart in a sincere “spiritual Communion” uniting yourself with Masses being celebrated all over the world. God knows each heart and He is desiring to gather us all into His Heart. May the Heart of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament, be praised adored and loved, with grateful affection, at every moment, in all the tabernacles of the world, even to the end of time.
 
I remembered it was First Friday and I went to early Mass, but somehow managed to forget I was not supposed to eat meat today and ate a breakfast sandwich immediately after Mass. 😦 I just now realized my mistake.

Why am I such an idiot? I reckon I can go without the meat tomorrow as “makeup” for it but you’d think if I remembered the one, I would remember the other.

Forgetting what day of the week it is, can happen to any of us. No idiocy needed or intended – it is not uncommon for human persons to forget one thing when there are so many other things on our minds and hearts.

Since the Church has given us the option of either abstaining from meat or offering some other form of penance, you still have this evening to ask the Holy Spirit what might be a good act of penance in place of abstaining from meat. The important thing is offer whatever you offer with all the love you can! 🙂

If we have not love, we are nothing. (cf 1 Cor 13)
