If the First Friday of a month falls on a weekday in Ordinary Time, what color vestment is worn by the celebrant, green or white?

Depends on the Mass being celebrated.
  1. If the Mass is that of the day without the celebration of a saint, then the vestments are green.
  2. The Mass is a Votive Mass of the Sacred Heart, the vestments are white.
  3. If an obligatory memorial, feast or solemnity falls on the day, then the vestments are according to the celebration (red for a martyr, white for a virgin or confessor, BVM or OLJC).

In some areas you can buy a book saying what colours, what memorials and so on. In my diocese it has a list of churches and main Mass times and contact details as well. Some places you can get a diary with a picture of a Chasuble in the appropriate colour, on days where there is a choice it splits the picture. It’s okay till you get a day where the priest has to choose, some days between green, white and red.

By virtue of the fact that it’s First Friday, this always falls on a weekday. 🙂

There are no particular vestments to use on First Friday as a direct cause of it being First Friday. As porthos pointed out, it depends upon what else is going on that day and vestments may be any of the liturgical colors in use. In Ordinary Time, this would generally be green, white or red as violet is reserved to Advent and Lent, i.e. outside Ordinary Time. Violet could of course be used for a funeral Mass offered on a First Friday, but I assume the OP is asking about regular weekday Mass and not an exceptional circumstance such as a funeral Mass.

The Ordo indicates which Mass to offer on a given day and thus which liturgical color to use. The possibility of celebrating optional feasts or memorials can result in there being several choices.

First Fridays don’t have their own liturgical colour. The colour depends on the day. If it’s a ferial weekday, the colour is green. If it’s a holy day (solemnity, feast, memorial) then it’ll be the colour of the holy day: red for martyrs otherwise white. If the priest celebrates the votive Mass of the Sacred Heart he may wear white vestments.

Isn’t “First Friday” a devotion? Why would there be vestment colors for a devotion.

I know there is sometimes benediction as part of First Friday devotions but I wasn’t aware that the priest had to fully vest in liturgical colors. I have served with a priest who did it in an alb + cope and veil for the blessing.

Should the priest vest fully for First Friday devotions? Or is the OP talking about Mass.

But in this case the “core” of the devotion centers around Mass and Communion, which brings up the vestment question. It isn’t like a standalone para liturgical novena.

Yes

I suppose there might be. If the priest wears a stole he’d probably wear one appropriate to the devotion.

We could infer he refers to the normal votive Mass associated with First Fridays: the Sacred Heart. The vestments for that Mass are white.

We can infer from his question that he was asking about the vestments worn during a First Friday Mass.
