I am curious about the nine First Fridays tradition. Information on the Internet is a little vague, so I thought I would ask here.

What exactly must one do to accomplish the nine First Fridays? Some sources say one only needs to receive Communion, but others say one must have a devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. What constitutes a devotion to the Sacred Heart?

Secondly, last month, January 1 was a Friday, and I went to vigil mass (December 31), and forgot to receive on January 1. Did my First Fridays clock reset, or does the vigil mass count since it is technically the Friday mass?

Thanks for any help!

I believe this is the only requirement, but we do the latter as well when I go for first Fridays. 🙂

To my knowledge, the devotion is just praying the litany to the most sacred heart of Jesus, I think. Someone else can hopefully confirm or expand upon this, but I’m certain this is it.

Yes it did reset, you have receive Communion on the first Friday of each month. 😦

And to go to Confession within a week either side of the First Friday. 🙂

No…there is no connection between First Friday Communion in honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and going to confession. That regards the First Saturday devotion in honor of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

The Promises of Our Lord to Saint Margaret Mary For Souls Devoted to His Sacred Heart
  1. “I will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life.”
  2. “I will establish peace in their homes.”
  3. “I will comfort them in all their afflictions.”
  4. “I will be their secure refuge during life, and above all in death.”
  5. “I will bestow a large blessing upon all their undertakings.”
  6. “Sinners shall find in My Heart the source and the infinite ocean of mercy.”
  7. “Tepid souls shall grow fervent.”
  8. "Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfection.
  9. "I will bless every place where a picture of My Heart shall be set up and honored.
  10. "I will give to priests the gifts of touching the most hardened hearts.
  11. "Those who shall promote this devotion shall have their names written in My Heart, never to be effaced.
  12. “I promise you in the excessive mercy of My Heart that My all-powerful love will grant to all those who communicate on the First Friday in nine consecutive months the grace of final penitence; they shall not die in My disgrace nor without receiving their sacraments; My divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment.”

And here are the requests of the Blessed Virgin to Sister Lucia of Fatima.

She explained those Five First Saturdays to Sr. Lucia Santos, one of the Fatima visionaries, on Dec. 10, 1925 in the following way:

“See, my daughter, my Heart encircled by thorns with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. Do you, at least, strive to console me. Tell them that I promise to assist at the hour of death with the graces necessary for salvation all those who, in order to make reparation to me, on the First Saturday of five successive months, go to confession, receive Holy Communion, say five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for a quarter of an hour, meditating on the … mysteries of the Rosary.”

It is specified that the confession can be done eight days before or eight days after the First Saturday.

No…the requirement is not to attend Mass. It is to receive Communion, which can be received apart from Mass. That is why, traditionally, Communion was brought to shut-ins on First Fridays.

The promises made to Saint Margaret Mary are given above.

Is anything besides communion required?
