I am going to my first healing sacrament. The priest wants me before Mass a few minutes. My mental illness issues are getting the worst of me. I will not have to confess either I guess this sacrament takes care of that. Has anyone been through this? IDK want to expect. OF the sacrament itself or afterward.

The Anointing of the Sick is a beautiful Sacrament. He will lay his hands on you and anoint you with oil. He may encourage others to stand around you and pray silently with him.
You may not feel immediately different, but God does heal.
God bless you, I’m happy for you to receive this blessing.

Praying to St. Dymphna for your health & recovery. May you receive all the healing Graces from the Sacrament of Anointing.

What about this, if one received as they should all these graces and fell into mortal sin. Would all the healing graces be invalidated? If so would the sacrament of reconciliation restore those healing graces or would the sacrament of healing be needed again? 🤷

If, at some point, you should commit a mortal sin, you simply go to confession.

Most people get anointed if facing surgery, have ongoing health issues, or are somehow in danger of death.

It’s good to be anointed, it will strengthen you.
But, as I said, if you should fall into a state of mortal sin, just go to confession.

My Pastor told me anyone ill could get this. And if their health changed later they could get it again. Maybe it’s a diocese option.

No, he is exactly correct. You receive it when you need it. For some it may be once in a lifetime, For someone with chronic illness, it may be more often. That’s for the priest and the person to decide on a case by case basis.

How did it go? 🙂

I had my first anointing just three weeks ago, immediately prior to going down for a cardiac catheterization. I would not let them take me downstairs until the priest arrived, and he came quite quickly. I shed tears, but they were tears of happiness, because I knew I was as ready as I could be, no matter the outcome.

Unfortunately I stayed all night at my Mom’s place and my step Dad came in and got me up saying It’s 11:38 I forgot to take you to church. You wanted to do that didn’t you. I was disappointed. But it’s rescheduled for Monday. That’s the good news.

Good. Set your phone alarm.
God bless.

Confession is only required with Annointing of the Sick, when there are mortal sins. This sacrament heals by

Catechism 1520 has “The anointing of the sick conveys several graces and imparts gifts of strengthening in the Holy Spirit against anxiety, discouragement, and temptation, and conveys peace and fortitude.”

According to the Council of Trent “When it is expedient for the soul’s salvation.” there may be the recovery of bodily health by the sick or injured person, which would be a secondary effect deriving from the spiritual.

I thought this took care of mortal sin.

If a person has mortal sins and cannot confess them due to a disorder, then the sacrament is given, under some conditions, shown below. If the disposition is not proper, sanctifying grace cannot be received, and so there is no effect from the sacrament.

Catechism 1532 has "The special grace of the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick has as its effects: … the forgiveness of sins, if the sick person was not able to obtain it through the sacrament of Penance; "

See some of the canon law:

Can. 1005 This sacrament is to be administered in a case of doubt whether the sick person has attained the use of reason, is dangerously ill, or is dead.

Can. 1006 This sacrament is to be conferred on the sick who at least implicitly requested it when they were in control of their faculties.

Can. 1007 The anointing of the sick is not to be conferred upon those who persevere obstinately in manifest grave sin.

I realize many people like post according to canon law, and rubrics, etc. But the op suffers with mental health issues. Lets just commend him to the mercy of God, his confessor, and the Sacrament.

I have sent an email to my Pastor asking about a possibly required confession before this he will I am sure let me know.

Wonderful. You’re in our prayers.
My Pastor said those who are able should take part in the saving graces of penance because the anointing didn’t specifically forgive sin. But forgiveness of sins is intrinsically tied to the sacrament. That’s why only ordained priests and bishops can do it. So I am believing until I ask him I can take part in Mass I need to seek penance.

It was very beautiful. I first did a short confession for forgiveness. Then Fr. read from a text and said many times “Lord have mercy” and I repeated. He laid his hand on me then anoiyed my head and palms. I partook of Mass I feel so much better. Stronger maybe from the partaking of the body and blood. 🙂
