First Holy Communion & Confirmation as an adult

Hi all,

I’m new here… joined to ask a question about receipt of the Sacraments of First Holy Communion & Confirmation.

My fiancee and I want to be able to have a Catholic wedding, however, due to a bit of moving around during her childhood, she never received Communion or Confirmation… though, she was Baptised…

Was wondering what steps we need to go thru so we can have a proper Catholic wedding.

call your parish tomorrow to begin the process of preparing for confirmation and first communion. how long it will take depends on how much catechesis (religious education) the candidate has had. We just finished a short lenten course for Catholics in this situation, we had first communion yesterday, and they will be confirmed after Easter, after the 3 Confirmation classes. The diocese produced a series of half-hour programs on the public TV station (which they own), to be followed up by discussion classes in the parishes. In our parish they had two chances for each class. But that was a one-time initiative as part of the lenten evangelization program. From now on they will take the regular confirmation class, which is a year for adults. They are also prepared of course for first confession.

Confirmation is required for marriage in the Church. If you are progressing with the preparation but the wedding date comes up first you are not absolutely forbidden to marry, but will be expected to pursue confirmation after the wedding. For instance in some dioceses the bishop only confirms once a year.

since this process will take a year, go see your parish today. For us, new classes are forming now because we go year-round.

If you however are in a civil marriage that requires convalidation, that must be done before receiving the sacraments, so don’t wait. I mention it because most of the people who took the class are in the position of having to wait for convalidation, since it also requires a preparation process.
