First Holy Communion

When did the term “First Holy Communion” or “First Communion” become simply “Communion”? Recently, I have heard the single word spoken by several well-known Catholics as though it had been generally accepted for ages. I can think of several explanations, none of which makes it seem quite kosher.

Well, it’s only “First Communion” the first time around, so I’m assuming these instances are clearly in the context of a person’s first Communion. So…I don’t know, but it’s really nothing to get worked up about.

I don’t understand the question. Communion is the rite or part of the Mass where the members of the congregation who are worthily disposed receive the Eucharist. First Communion is just that, the first time a new Catholic, or a child of catechetical age, receives the Eucharist after the prescribed preparation.
