The land of Kuravilangad is blessed by the esteemed presence of St. Mary’s Forane Church, which was built in 105 A.D(just one hundred years before Constantine declared Christianity as the official religion in the Roman Empire). It is believed, Mother Mary’s first appearance in the world, was in Kuravilangad, India. Our Lady appeared to a few children at Kuravilangad, who were tending their flock in the bushes. Our Lady asked them to build a church at the place from where a miraculous perpetual spring sprouted, a spring which exists even today. The children reported the events to the elders and a church was built there.

Thanks for the link, first I’ve read on this.

"Our Lady appeared to a few children

Our Lady asked them to build a church at the place from where a miraculous perpetual spring sprouted, a spring which exists even today.

The children reported the events to the elders and a church was built there."

I must say, does have that familiar ring. 😉

That would be 200 years before Constantine (sorry, couldn’t resist). It’s interesting how often the Blessed Virgin appears near springs. What is the meaning of this?

Actually about two hundred years before Constantine’s time, but fascinating nonetheless. Has any archaeological or historic research been done to verify either the age of the church itself or the fact that it was named for the Blessed Virgin as early as 105 AD? If so, it would certainly be a strong counterargument against those who say Mary was only venerated in later centuries.

Yes you are correct.

There where Jewish colonies in the first century nearby these place. Apostle St Thomas (in AD 52) gained converts from these Jews and Brahmins . This Marian apparition is believed as an incident behind the construction of church at Kuravilangad in second century. Mother Mary expressed her wish to build a church near the spring. That spring is still there

All ancient chirstian churches (which originated before 4th century AD - Orthodox and Catholic) accepts all seven sacraments and venerates mother mary. It is among those christian churches which originated after 16nth century teaches not to venerate mother mary and rejects many sacraments of church. We Eastern Christians does not give any importance to the teachings of such newly originated churches

The symbolism of a spring is that (especially for those who live in desert areas) a spring is literally a fountain of life. Without water nothing can live. Also, spring water is naturally pure, unlike pond, creek, or river water.

Also, Constantine never made Christianity the official religion (sorry, I couldn’t resist either). He legitimated Christianity, but is was made the state religion in 380 by Theodosius.

Just curious, do you have a date/quote from one of those churches? I assume the rejection of Mary as a venerated figure is part of the Reformation but have never seen the first such dismissal of the Blessed Mother

Thank you for the links!
I am, however, also interested in the first rejection of the veneration of Mary if you have such a link
I think rejection of veneration of mary happened only after protestant reformation.

Before this apparition, the Mother of God appeared in other place. When saint James the Greater was in Hispania, Our Lady appeared to him at Saragossa and in this place, nowadays, is the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar.
This apparition is singular because it occurred when the Virgin Mary was still living in Jerusalem (or Ephesus), so it would be a bilocation or a miraculous arrival.

I am not an Eastern Catholic but I am pretty sure that you are correct on this. I know that the Orthodox and Catholic Churches have always venerated Mary. I am not sure if any early heresies (before Protestantism) rejected veneration of Mary or not. Regardless of whether they did or not though it would be false doctrine to reject veneration of Mary.
