This morning I attended my first Catholic Mass. I was very excited as I’ve have been studying Catholic theology, reading the CCC, re-reading Bible passages, reading apologetics, etc. for the past several months, and I finally got to see first hand what I was reading about. I was kind of nervous as I didnt know what to expect and wasn’t quite sure what to do and what I was supposed to participate in. I must say that I was quite impressed and felt very at home, but most importantly felt this is where the Lord was leading me. I am planning on attending RCIA classes in the fall, and am very thankful to this board for helping me in my journey in coming home to the Catholic Church.

I’m happy for you, too. Actually, maybe a little envious. I’ve grown up in the Catholic Church, going to Mass for years now. It’s hard for me to imagine what it would be like for the first time.

I commend you for all the preparation you’ve done ahead of time. All your studies prepared your mind to have a meaningful experience while God was pouring grace into your soul!🙂

Great! And the best part is, the more and more you grow in the Spirit, the more and more you will appreciate it–and it seems like you are already a spiritual person! I know growing up I didn’t get it–but I have really begun to appreciate how it is truly Heaven on Earth 🙂

This passage of Scripture sticks out for me:

1 Cor. 2:7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, a wisdom which is hidden, which God ordained before the world, unto our glory: 8 Which none of the princes of this world knew; for if they had known it, they would never have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 But, as it is written: That eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither hath it entered into the heart of man, what things God hath prepared for them that love him. 10 But to us God hath revealed them, by this Spirit. For the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, but the spirit of a man that is in him? So the things also that are of God no man knoweth, but the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received not the spirit of this world, but the Spirit that is of God; that we may know the things that are given us from God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in the learned words of human wisdom; but in the doctrine of the Spirit, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 But the sensual man perceiveth not these things that are of the Spirit of God; for it is foolishness to him, and he cannot understand, because it is spiritually examined. 15 But the spiritual man judgeth all things; and he himself is judged of no man.

Outstanding! It’s so exciting isn’t it! When I reverted, I felt like the prodigal son and it was just so humbling yet so exciting!!! Congrats and I with you so many blessings on your journey into the Church!!! 😃 👍

I am very happy that you had come to the Mass. I keep you in my prayer for your journey home.

You are in my prayers as well.

As you grow more comfortable at Mass, you are welcome to participate in everything (but Eucharist, obviously) so you are invited to bless yourself with holy water upon entering the church (reminds us of our baptism), genuflect on right knee before the tabernacle (when entering your pew to acknowledge Jesus’ True Presence there), make the sign of the cross as directed by the Priest or Deacon (at beginning and very end of Mass), etc. I have a friend that is Baptist but attends Mass with us regularly and though she is unable to receive communion, she takes that time to have private prayer while kneeling in the pew. I think she has the prayers memorized pretty well now after so much repetition!👍

If you haven’t already, I suggest you buy yourself a missal (if you have a local Catholic store, they can point you in the right direction) so that it will be able to follow along in the Mass more easily. Though they are available in the pew at church, it helps to the Church to familiarize yourself with the readings each week as well as the Order of the Mass.

I still remember my first Mass. I joined RCIA shortly after that. I was confirmed on Easter and its like I’m going to Mass for the first time every Sunday. I can’t even begin to tell you how great it is to take that first Holy Communion…Good luck on your journey!!
 
Awesome!! I feel that way every time I go to Mass! I truly feel the presence of our Lord there! 🙂

This was actually going to be my next question. I was wondering what I was allowed to participate in at Mass (Obviously not the Eucharist). Thank you very much for this post. I felt comfortable at Mass, but a little out of place as I did not know what to do during certain times, but I am learning a lot and hopefully will be better familarized with everything come this Sunday.
