First Penance

Last Saturday there were a handful of children making their first penance at my parish (we have a small parish). I was so dissappointed in our priest. He did not even dress for the occassion. He heard their first confessions in jeans and a polo shirt! :tsktsk:Shouldn’t he have been required to wear something more appropriate?

Did he at least wear a stole? That I believe is a requirement in most situations.

No to Latin Mass Parish (but I am now thinking of checking out another parish that does Latin Mass). He did not wear a stole unless he leaves it in the confessional.

He would most likely leave the stole in the confessional.

Since they are children, maybe he dressed that way to make them feel more comfortable.

As someone said above, it’s possible he dressed in a way to make the children feel more at eeze. Maybe you should speak to him about it personally so that he can tell you why he did what he did?

This. Since its been mentioned that its also a small parish, perhaps the priest had come from another appointment and didn’t have time to be properly dressed. Our priest is taking care of two parishes at the moment. I try to give him more of the benefit of the doubt these days.

Assuming that the priest is in the confessional and so you can’t really see him, does it matter how he is dressed? I’m not trying to give a snarky answer, it’s a real question, but I can see the difference between Mass and confession. In the former this is a very public display and dress makes a big difference. In confession, this is more of a private affair. But I’m just basing this on my thoughts and nothing else, so I’d like to hear a more definitive answer.

This priest did not come from another appointment. Just to remind people we are talking FIRST PENANCE. I think out of respect he could have been more properly dressed, none of the children came in jeans. But I do agree, he can do and wear whatever he wants - you are right it wasn’t like it was a Mass.

I think ByzCathCantor was asking if it was Roman Catholic or Eastern Catholic, etc.
