I’ll apologize first off for this being so long.

Hi everyone! I’m new here, and new to the Catholic faith as well. I started attending Mass at the beginning of this year, and just started RCIA.

Some background on me: I just graduated law school and passed the bar. I was married for 5 years and have been divorced for 2. I started dating a Catholic guy about a year ago (I was baptized Lutheran).

We were together for 10 months and broke up approx. 6 weeks ago. He is a few years younger than me. He knew about my previous marriage from the beginning, and was very loving and supportive of my situation. I can honestly say this guy was my first true love, and I genuinely believe he felt the same way about me. We fell for each other very quickly and unexpectedly. He brought up his beliefs right away, and I completely supported him and respected his morals. That’s not to say we didn’t mess up (we did), but we always picked back up and strove to help each other and do better in the future.

Throughout our time together, he brought up marriage and children and the future very often. I made sure he took the lead with all of those discussions and never brought it up on my own. He had his parents fly down to meet me a few months into the relationship because of how serious we were. I spent 3 family vacations with him, he came to my parents home quite often, and things were going well. We had no major fights, and we worked out little disagreements/communication issues.

He still had a year of law school left after I graduated in the spring, and got an internship about 7 hours away for the summer. I was studying for the Bar, but we saw each other every other weekend throughout the summer.

I noticed towards the end of July he was acting a little off, but I had the Bar and didn’t want to focus on it too much. When he was done with his internship he came back and was flying home a few days prior to me joining him.

The night before he left, I got this feeling that his last night before coming back he had gone to dinner with someone and hadn’t told me. I asked him, and he eventually admitted that he had met up with a girl from his work and her family for dinner and purposely didn’t tell me. I told him that was unacceptable (the lying, not that he couldn’t have friends that were girls), and couldn’t happen again. We both asked each other if we wanted to remain in the relationship and we both said yes. He cried.

The next day he left. I joined him 3 days later, very unsure of where the relationship was going with the trust issue and everything. As soon as I arrived and he picked me up, it was like how it was in the beginning. I thought that maybe just the stress of being apart for the summer and everything. He went on and on about how much he missed me, needed me in his life, wanted to spend Christmas with me, etc. We spent a week camping with his family, and everything was great.

Things again got a little weird when we got back. He moved into his new apartment. While he was gone for the summer, I had stored his stuff for him at my place. I also scouted out his new place while studying for the Bar, since he was so far away. Once school started, I could tell he was acting off again.

We had one fight about being chaste essentially, and I got my feelings very hurt. I was getting very mixed signals from him, one day it was ok and one day it wasn’t. He wasn’t nice, called me a name, and had me leave his place at 2:30 in the morning. The next day we went to Mass, and then afterwards talked. I explained my feelings, he saw my point of view, and apologized. I told him that we couldn’t do anything anymore going forward, and he said that was fine. I asked him if we were still on the same page about marriage and where our relationship was headed and he said yes, that’s why he was dating me.

Two weeks later I could tell he was down and out of sorts so we talked and he opened up and said he didn’t feel like he had a home anymore (living away from his family and having spent the past 2 summers in different places for internships), he didn’t have any friends at school because he really didn’t like anyone, etc. He cried. Then I cried because I thought it was me, and he assured me it wasn’t. We had a great weekend following that, and I thought things were back on track.

The following week everything was great. He had a test which I gave him material for, we had a dinner/game night one of the nights, and made plans for the weekend to go to a bbq and then a concert afterwards.
Friday night he broke up with me. His reasons: he didn’t feel like we were on the same page about marriage, he felt less certain than I did, and he needed time to figure things out. He cried more than I did, and we hugged when he left.

We texted once after (he asked if I passed the Bar; by the grace of God and praying the Rosary before each test day, I did) and then he came back two weeks after the breakup to get the rest of his stuff. I wrote him a long text about how I was feeling and wanted us to work on our relationship, pray for each other, be there through each season of life, etc. He basically just said he respected my thoughts, but he broke up with me because he was getting into a bad place, was getting self destructive, was stressed, and just knew he had to make to changes. We hugged afterwards, and he left.

(cont. to next post)

We’ve texted a couple of times since then. His dad called me about 3 weeks ago and asked how the job hunt was going. He ended the convo by saying that him and his wife still think of me as family and love me. I wasn’t expecting that, and was very touched by it. The last contact I had with my ex was that I had called him and left a message asking to get together to talk. He responded and said he had school deadlines coming up and would in touch early the following week. That was almost 3 weeks ago, and I haven’t heard from him.

I’ve heard rumors that he his somewhat seeing a girl from school who just got out of a serious relationship herself. She is not Catholic or religious at all to my knowledge. She was also someone I considered a friend.

It has been almost 7 weeks since the breakup, and I still feel blindsided. I didn’t think we had any major issues that couldn’t have been worked out together. I loved him and trusted him, and out of the blue he was done.

Some signs I maybe overlooked: I was warned that he is a relationship junkie. Looking back, I don’t think he’s ever been single for very long. He broke up with his last ex gf (non-Catholic) 3 days before she moved for him, dated a Catholic girl at school for a few weeks, then got back together with the ex gf. He dated her until she broke up with him for not reading some anti-Catholic book, and that’s when we got to know each other. He is also very much an adrenaline junkie with an addictive personality (he admitted this to me, and I observed it). He liked to gamble; there were times we would go to the casino twice in one weekend, and we went 3 times in 5 days while on vacation with his parents. I’m not a gambler, but went with him each time.

I guess I just felt like I was different, because he told me and showed me I was. (What a cliche.)

To be honest though, I feel like the rest of my life has been richer since the breakup. Coming straight out of taking the Bar was difficult. Most of my friends had moved, I didn’t have a job while waiting for results, etc. I didn’t think I was acting needy, but maybe I was.

Now, I’ve met amazing girls at church through a Young Adult group and befriended them. Between that and RCIA, plus Mass, I’m at church at least 3 days a week, which has truly been a Godsend. I pray multiple times throughout the day, and feel a lot closer to God than ever before.
My annulment paperwork has been sent in, and I’m excited about where the next chapter of my life is leading me.

I’m a little worried though that my past will be a turn-off to another Catholic guy, that I’m getting old (29, haha), etc. I keep wondering what I did wrong in the relationship. Was I not strict enough? Too strict? Was the conversation about us being chaste the final straw? Did I dodge a bullet? I feel used. As soon as he didn’t need me store his stuff or fulfill other needs, he was done.

I want to have faith that God has better plans for me, and I keep asking for His will to be done in my life, and to have the acceptance and grace to trust. I don’t want to date for a long time. My heart is just broken, and I don’t know how I can trust again after this.

So that’s my story. Again, I apologize for it being so long. Even just typing it all out has helped. If anyone has any pieces of advice or can p(name removed by moderator)oint something from what I have written that may have caused all of this, I would greatly appreciate any insight. Thank you, and I hope to become more involved on here!

Welcome, NewFL girl,
Each relationship is different, and it doesn’t look to me from what you said that you did anything that screams not relationship material!!! whereas from what you say, he may have some problems in that area, which may simply be due to his youth.

Strict? Were you trying to keep from sinning and encourage him not to sin? That’s a good thing!!! Setting a boundary that you didn’t want to be lied to? Also good!

I am happy that other than that things are going well for you on this fabulous journey you are taking into the Church! It seems like you received the pearl of great price from this relationship and that you can be grateful and let it be.

Welcome to CAF! 👋

If this is where you are at now, I’d say you are in a pretty good place. Not that it won’t still hurt. But if this is your prayer, I think you will come out of it just fine.

It sounds like you’ve been through a lot and it’s probably outside of my area of expertise to p(name removed by moderator)oint where things could have gone wrong. Sometimes people just turn out to be not the people we thought they were. That’s not necessarily your fault. It is what it is. But if he had these types of tendencies (relationship addict, adrenaline junkie, etc.), then I would think you are probably better off. From what you describe, it sounds like you have a greater sense of peace since the break up. That is usually a pretty good sign that you are headed in the right direction.

29 is far from “old maid” territory. 😛 I would encourage you to spend this year in RCIA really focused on the Lord and what He wants to do in your life. Put thoughts of future relationships on hold. You can get the annulment business taken care of, learn about the Catholic faith, and ultimately be welcomed into this wonderful Church. Then you will be in a better position to form the type of relationship that God has planned for you.

I will say a prayer for you as you continue on this journey. It is an exciting (if somewhat trying) time. God bless!

NewFLgirl,

Welcome to the forums. You are still young and you did nothing wrong in that relationship. It seems that you are happier without him, making new friends and moving closer to God. I am sure you will find someone who will treat you as you deserve to be – with love and faithfulness – to you and to God our Father also. Do not let this one guy make you think that you need to compromise your morals or your beliefs. You stood your ground – good for you – and he showed his true side. I am glad (even though it may hurt) that you are done with him, you deserve better.

As for being married in the past – nothing to worry about as I am sure your annulment will be granted. I also was married in the Church. There were several issues that caused me to divorce her and file for annulment – which was granted. I am now getting married to a great woman who understands that I was married before but accepts that as the annulment was granted.

Remain strong and trust in God and you will do great. Welcome to the forums again.

May God bless and keep you always.

You’re not alone; there are lots of people in the same situation. Welcome to a wonderful journey of faith as you become a new Catholic. I recommend that you take it one step at a time, in an orderly fashion. Get your RCIA completed and resolve your previous marriage one way or another before thinking about getting involved with men again. Enjoy being single and discover your own interests for a while. 😊

I think it’s a good you didn’t marry this guy. It seems he’s having a hard time committing, and maybe he always will… People are weak- some, more than others.

You’re ok. Just be chaste. Keep your standards high, and pray to God. Maybe try some of the Catholic match site.

Sorry to hear you’re hurting, but it seems that you’re making sound decisions. Dating, finding a life partner, etc., is not an easy thing. Neither is being divorced (been there) and the annulment process (starting soon - took me 13 years to begin to try).

Definitely take some time for yourself. 🙂

God bless.

you definitely dodged a bullet. You have a wonderful life ahead of you. even if he were to contact you, i would let it go and not respond. turn your face towards the sun and keep the wind at your back. he doe sound like he needs to mature and find his own way, and frankly sounds like you are better off without him.

Thank you all so much for your kind words, and warm welcome!

It’s natural for me to question myself, since I’m highly self-critical. I need to knock that off, haha.

I’m finding that the more I learn about the Catholic faith and surround myself with like-minded people, the happier I am and more I feel myself growing. It’s been a great journey so far, and I think will only get more rewarding the more I immerse myself and learn.

Thank you again! :thankyou:
