First RCIA Class tonight

Since I joined this forum, I have been to Mass twice and bought a rosary, which I pray with every day, even though I am not sure how to meditate the mysteries and what I should be aware of in order to meditate them. I am going to ask the Priest to explain them to me and get some guidance on where to find the passages in the Bible relating to them.

Anyway, tonight I start my Journey into Faith (RCIA) class at my local parish church. I’m not nervous but I am nervous too - if you know what I mean?

This is quite a step for me, especially as by background and beliefs used to be the polar opposite of what I am feeling now. Wish me luck!

Any sincere and humble spirit of contemplation on any of the Mysteries is a good one. Don’t get upset if your mind wanders, it happened with the great Saints, it happens to all of us. Some of our fellow members will probably (nudge, nudge, hint, hint) post the scriptural references for each Mystery.

Mysteries of the Rosary. One link, as requested. One side note, though, to the OP. Don’t expect scriptural references for every Mystery. The Assumption and Coronation of Mary aren’t in the Bible

Will be praying for you, God bless! The rosary is a beautiful prayer to our Lady and Jesus.
 
Good luck in RCIA tonight! I know what feeling okay and nervous about it at the same time feels like. That’s kinda what i felt before my first class. 🙂

Well, don’t expect too much teaching into the mysteries of the Rosary or of the doctrines of the Faith (other than social teaching) at your neighborhood Novus Ordo Parish , my friend. These are believed to be “outdated” by VII.

OP, please disregard this. There is no such thing as a Novus Ordo parish. The rosary and doctrines of the faith are alive and well in the Church.

Where do people get such silly ideas?

Some of my convert friends were taught in RCIA that contraception was a matter of personal choice, and were never taught that the Eucharist actually becomes the Body and Blood of Our Lord in the Mass. Sadly, these “silly ideas” are just reality for many Catholics.

We know nothing about this person’s parish - there is no reason to make disparaging remarks. Also, Vatican II did not say the rosary or any other devotions, or any doctrines of the faith (note: th rosary is not a doctrine) were “outdated.” Please take time during this year of faith to read at least a few of the documents of Vatican II to educate yourself.

I am very sorry to hear this. I hope you were able to show your friends that these ideas are not what the church teaches. I also hope your friends asked questions to clarify the remarks made by their RCIA instructors. People often speak in shorthand and do not make themselves fully clear, instructors may also assume more knowledge on the part of the participants than they actually have.

Examples of errant teaching is one issue. What the other poster is doing is causing doubt and division. The generalized accusations he makes are baseless, notwithstanding some rogue RCIA programs somewhere.

One of our RCIA team members was actually praying the rosary yesterday during Father’s presentation, when he was called upon to give some (name removed by moderator)ut. :o

I don’t know whether your experience or my friend’s is more representative. I suspect it depends on the bishop, and so varies from diocese to diocese. I’ve always thought that your experiences that you’ve posted here sound much better than anything I’ve seen or heard of in the Mid-Atlantic region. Where the average lies I don’t know.

I think there is a very careful line to be walked between sowing doubt and trying to protect a potential catechumen from the likely possibility of scandal. I know more than enough second-hand stories of people being driven away from the Church by RCIA to feel apprehensive whenever I think someone will base their decision to enter the Church on their experience with it.

I agree the post you responded to did not walk that line well, but its not a baseless concern.
