Oops! Sorry RobHorn, that was meant for our friend Catholic Dude.
…as in “et tu -]Brutus/-]”
You forgot the most important characteristic of New World slavery and the one that makes this slave system almost wholly different from any other slave system that ever existed in the world is that this one was racial. So, yes, it’s complex, what constitutes slavery. Of course what the Africans endured can’t be compared to anything else because it was almost always lifelong, intergenerational, and designed to crush their sense of identity, their ways of communicating and their spirits as fast as possible. It was a horrendous chapter. But this country is built on a lot of horror stories besides that one. It’s just sad.

Btw, there is reason to believe that these Greeks were not under the EP, but the pope of Rome. They were from areas where the Venetians, Templars and French were involved. This just didn’t sound right to me. But of people and politics, can you be sure that something that sounds wrong, is wrong? So I didn’t a brief search for a site by Greeks on Greek immigration to the US.
This one looks reliable. Be your own judge.

I found this in the Catholic Ecyclopedia.
"When Florida in 1763 passed under English rule, freedom of worship was guaranteed, but the illiberal interpretation of officials resulted in the general exodus of Catholics, so that by 1765, the bi-centenary year of the Church in Florida, a few defaced church buildings presented the only evidence of its former Catholicity. "
If the OP was trying to implicate the Catholic Church or Catholics in this supposed slavery, it appears that he missed the mark. It’s understanable, because the site he linked did say “slavery”. It looks like the author was being dramatic, calling indentured servitude, slavery. Good for dramatic effect, but inaccurate.
The post was good, though. If he didn’t post it, I wouldn’t have learned of these interesting Greek and Catholic history tid-bits.
Oh, the site he linked to also had information on the first Catholic Mass said here.
The info in the post is inaccurate, but aren’t you glad it’s here?

Actually the mamluk (slave) system in Islam was also racially based. The slave manuals divide the slaves by race, and their respective qualities. As far as I know, Kafur was the only black ever to rule, all other slave rulers were white. Differences were also made between children from black children (often tossed out with mom when she lost her looks) and white (who often were the chief heirs, the number notables born of slave mothers is extremely high in Islam’s annals). You forgot the most important characteristic of New World slavery and the one that makes this slave system almost wholly different from any other slave system that ever existed in the world is that this one was racial.
No matter how bad things got for indentured servants whether they were Irish, Greek or Scottish they had the one thing that would forever keep them and their progeny out of the ranks of the truly enslaved and that was white skin. That’s the major deciding difference between the experiences of these two groups and the one that makes any comparisons extremely tough.
