First time reading bible

Hiya

I have decided to finally read through the whole bible. I just have not been able to power myself through the swedish editions. It may sound stupid but I associate the swedish language so much with protestantism that I just can’t seriously read a bible in swedish. And im not big on reading online. To much text on a computer screen makes my head ache :hypno:

The selection of english versions is very limited here but i ended up buying “the CTS New Catholic Bible”. I have tried searching the forums for threads about this version but there is not very much info about it…

I’ve seen most people recommend the RSV-CE2 and Douay-Rheims. But i can only get my hands on the new testament from the RSV-CE2, and the Douay-Rheims is way to expensive for me.

Is the CTS worth buying? Did i make a good choice or was this a waste of mai moneys 😊

Actually, I was given a copy of the New American Bible by my parish priest (mine is in paper back and kinda red–is that familiar?) I’d never read the whole bible either and am working at it–I started with the NT though. Anyway, I found the bible I was given to be just fine–and it is of course, in English—lots of text explanations etc on the side)… The biggest problem with mine is that it isn’t bound well and some of my pages are loose.

Just want to tell you, that I am touched by this. I never had a personal Bible when I was young. The first Bible I had was given to me by my brother after he left college, He used the Bible as it was one of the subjects he took. It was a Protestant Bible, the RSV but how I treasured it. I still have it today though it has seen better time. I can understand when you said about loose pages and that they don’t bind well.

Hi, if English is not your first language, and as starter, I think you may want to use simple English language Bible. NIV is a good one though it may not be Catholic. If it is for cursory reading to get an overview of the Bible, then start with a simple one. Mine was a RSV but how I love the word today and still very much a Catholic.😉

(To be fair, I do have a good collection of Bibles by the time I was an adult but it was nothing like that when I was a young boy).

Since I now know that we do indeed have the same bible–just let me add this: when you get to the NT, be sure to read the introduction that talks about the history at the beginning of each gospel and epistle and also the little explanations that are on the right side of each page. Remember that the bible as we know it was translated from multiple parchment trails in multiple languages. What those little explanations do is give you the best translation from a variety of sources. Another words, the scripture might use 1 particular word in the Greek manuscript–but in the aramic or latin versions different words might be used in each—and now we are reading an english translation of all three to top it off! Sometimes the original words from different original sources apparently don’t seem to mean the same thing so whomever the great minds were that translated the bible into english had to find a single word to express what the old scriptures meant–and sometimes there really isn’t one–just as with many slang expressions we use today. So it explains why they say it means such and such–very helpful to me anyway. .And God bless you too! And good luck reading–I’m very glad I’m doing so!👍
 
First time reading bible question.

The newer version of the NAB is quite nice (especially the version that I am about to suggest).

I’d like to suggest this one (with insert pages explaining the Catholic faith–absolutely wonderful insert pages informationally).

Very readable and also very accurate. This is the Bible I would use if I were reading it cover to cover.

I have the RSV-CE2 Bible too and I love it as well. This is the Bible I’d use for word studies, etc. or general reading (I won’t get into the reasons why here).

Check your used book stores locally in Sweden for a Knox Version perhaps. More literal and very readable. I had a friend bring me one back from Ireland (I know that doesn’t help you in Sweden).

Would you be willing to buy online or are you just looking for local shopping? I have no idea what English Catholic Bibles would be available locally to you in Sweden. But if you can, I recommend trying to find a copy of the 1966 Jerusalem Bible, in which your CTS New Catholic Bible is derived from. I don’t like the changes that the CTS implemented from the 1966 Jerusalem Bible, but that’s a personal thing.

If you’re looking for really simple English, I recommend the Contemporary English Version. It’s not the best translation but it’s a good, simple translation to read through if it’s your first time reading through the entire Bible. I used it when first reading through the NT the first time, and it comes in a Catholic version. It’s an American translation and I doubt it’s known of in Europe, but that’s another recommendation.
