Is it sinful to smoke a cigarette or use chewing tobacco for the first time, knowing you could get addicted?

If it is then I need to confess what I did 19 years ago (and am still doing).

Again, you need to think in terms of “What is God’s perfect will for me?” DO NOT think in terms of, “How close to the edge of sin can I get without technically sinning?” No offense, but it seems that the latter of the two questions seems to be your mindset on many of the threads you have started. Your attitude should be to love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength.

Are you old enough to legally buy cigarettes?? If you are not, and I think maybe you are not, then YES IT WOULD BE A SIN BECAUSE YOU HAVE BROKEN THE LAW. And trust me, I am a smoker and it is a terrible addiction…

I am not of legal age but will be soon. I am curious to try it, but I don’t think it will be that hard to stay away from it.

Is smoking even that enjoyable? Or is it just the addiction that makes people keep doing it?

I smoked my first cigarette when I was about 10 or 11 and off and on until I was 30. Then, never again. Thank God.

Think how much money you will be literally burning up and how much stink you will generate not only for those around you but for your own clothes, hair, car, house. It is gross. And NO you cannot cover up the stench with air fresheners or gum (breath). It is nasty. Kissing a smoker is like kissing an ashtray.

My DH used to smoke a cigar now and again with his brothers. I would not allow it at my house, and when he came home, he had to shower, immediately wash his clothes, brush his teeth and gargle. I could still smell it. N-A-S-T-Y.

PeteZaHut, I smoked cigarettes for over 20 years back “in the day” when what seemed like the majority of the population smoked. Cigarette ads were everywhere, you could smoke anywhere you wanted, the grocery store, on a plane, (man, you ought to seen THAT! When that “No Smoking” light went off, 60 people instantly lit up!),…heck, we could even smoke in a hospital room!
Anyone you would have asked would have said; yes, they enjoyed it.

What they were enjoying was, in my opinion, that purely “momentary” satisfaction of an almost in-escapable addiction.

I eventually managed to quit cold turkey.

Please don’t start, it’s NOT cool, and neither is it acceptable.

Chewing tobacco is not an acceptable option.
The addiction is worse, and it’s just as disgusting.
Trust me,…I know what I’m talking about; I’ve been hooked on Copenhagen for the last fifteen years, and have NOT been able to quit.😦 believe me, I’ve tried.

So; my advice to you would be; Stay away from tobacco!
Unless of course you want to spend the rest of your life reaching for something, anything, to momentarily satisfy that addiction, and doing the best you can to ignore the “looks” you get from everybody around you.

I constantly cough. I’ve spent thousands of dollars on cigarettes since I started smoking when I was 14 years old. I constantly cough. I take a deep breath and sometimes my lungs hurt. Oh and did I mention that I constantly cough? Cigarettes are killing me.

You simply being curious could turn into more than what you bargained for. I never thought I would be addicted, I never thought that smoking would be physically harmful, it’s caught up to me and I’m only 32 years old. Save your lungs and don’t pick up the first one. You’re about to be 18 years old, start your adulthood by making a wise decision.

Amen to that.

I still enjoy it, but it’s very hard to quit. If I had it to do over again, I wouldn’t have started in the first place…13 years later, it’s amazing that I’ve been smoking for that long.

Do yourself a favor and don’t even try it. If drinking makes you more likely to give in, then don’t drink, either.

It’s seriously that big a deal.
Peace,
Dante

Just like most others who have replied to this post, I say with them, **don’t start!. ** I have been a smoker for the last 10 years (I started when I was in my 20’s - how stupid I was!) and believe me, it is the hardest thing to quit. Your clothes smell, your car smells if you smoke in there and don’t even get me started on trying to clean nicotine off the windows!

I would definitely pray everytime you get the urge to try it. It’s a nasty addiction, not to mention expensive! I will definitely be praying for you that you don’t start. You can overcome this!! 🙂
