Palomas - may I ask, what are you wearing as head covering daily?

Dana
Hi Dana,

I have been wearing larger scarves, wrapped around my head, or if I’m doing more physical work or exercise, I wear a nice bandana. I also have a collection of nice hats that I’ll probably tap into at some point too. But for now I am mostly using scarves. 🙂

I love seeing the respect that it displays toward God.

My wife and I have known each other since I was in the 5th grade and she was in the 3rd at St. Mary Magdalene in Willowick, Ohio. In school, all the girls had to wear a mantilla.

Because she always wore the mantilla inside the church, I always looked at my wife in a very special way when we were dating. Pedestal? Absolutely! She was “my little Catholic girl,” I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

We dated for six years and have been married now for 38 years and five kids, two grandkids, and she is still “my little Catholic girl!”

I’ll tell you one thing about wearing the mantilla; the guys admire and respect you and wouldn’t even dare think about trying any hanky-panky!

Where would you buy one? I have a lace head covering but would really like a larger mantilla…perhaps in black…

Hi everyone,

Palomas, you are going back to the old jewish roots of the Church, there are some lovely web sites out there that will let you know different ways to tie scarves.

I have been wearing a mantilla to Mass for over a year and older men come up to me and tell me how nice it it is to see a woman covering her head again. But still no other women are doing it. I also collect vintage hats so I am waiting for, a little cooler weather to wear some of them, with my sweaters and suits.

😃

The one that I have was made for me. Apparently it didn’t take much to make – the lady bought some black lace-type material and sewed the sides into a rather large rectangle. I’m going to go to the fabric store soon to see if I can make myself some more.

Marilynclssc - do you know of some specific websites off hand?

CHRIS DICKSON - that is wonderful!!

Thanks, beckers! I do think there was some heavenly sniggering at my expense this morning. I was late to the doctor so I hope I got the point! 🙂

I’m blessed to be at a parish with a very orthodox pastor and there are more than a few women who wear veils at our NO Masses. I’m sure a mantilla would not draw eyes at my parish but it might when paired with my jeans and knit top. 😉 But I will certainly check out the group you mention if I need some extra companionship!
Since this thread got resurrected I thought I’d share my latest news. I purchased a very well made crochet skull-cap type headcovering from Devorah. I felt a scarf or mantilla would look strange since I have extremely short hair to begin with…hardly anything to cover! The scull cap fits right over my head and the tops of my ears. I’ve been wearing it for about a month now and I love that I never have to fuss with it or worry that it will come loose.

Please, please show me which one you purchased…

I’ve got some of her kerchiefs, and I’ve examined them very well and plan to make myself some, they look rather easy to make.

Aimee- Halo Works has, in my opinion, some of the most beautiful and excellent quality mantillas. I purchased a black soft tulle one, It was the almond shape…however, the sides were too long for me, I’m only 5ft tall. I had to cut them off and reconstruct the ends of the sides, otherwise, awesome! I should have purchased the junior size.

I bought a crocheted beret at Target today. Ten bucks. Just like the kind my grandma used to make. It’ll be nice for church.🙂

I have been eyeballing those at Target for a while now…I might have to break down and purchase one myself…they are cute!

Yeah, it’s a little less conspicuous at the NO where no one wears mantillas. There’s only a light peppering of hats in our NO congregation.

I do love mantillas, but I save them for the TLM and Adoration.🙂

It actually is not just Seminarian Matt’s opinion and private interpretation of scripture, and it truly is the teaching of the Church.

Here’s an article that gives a good overview on wearing the veil with regards to both Canon Law and Sacred Scripture.

I have an extremely hard time believing anything on that website, because the author attacks the Vatican a lot. Furthermore, show me where the Church explictly states in a document that veils are necessary to be worn in the prescence of the Lord. (Can’t use the 1917 version of the Code of Canon Law, either)

I admire women for wearing veils, but I don’t think it is mandatory.

I have been contemplating wearing a headcovering to Mass. I started to read this thread because I thought ladies would be sharing their thoughts in regard to their experiences in wearing hats or veils. Now the arguments have started about whether it is right, wrong, appropriate or otherwise and it has spoiled the excitement I had about the thread. I wanted to share with other ladies on the subject, as it pertains to the OP. Haven’t there been enough arguements on this subject already? Please let us discuss veiling on a simple level related to those of us who may choose to cover our heads for whatever reason. Sometimes people just like to share thoughts on a subject. May we have a converstation please?

Palomas et al

Living in the south in a state with only a 4% Catholic population. I had to get ingenious about acquiring a mantilla. So after checking all the Mexincan and Latin stores around, I went to a Hancock fabric store and found wedding lace. bout a yard and got 2 out of that yard, could have gotten 3 but the first was kinda screwed up. Also being lazy I did not sew the raw edges I fabric glued them and pined them till dry.

The most common thread I find in those who wear the mantilla is that it removes distraction. I find it very interesting that this puts it in parallel with the Jewish tallit, or prayer shawl, which Jewish men are traditionally bound to wear while praying. The great irony is that there are Jewish communities in which the women are fighting for the opportunity to wear the tallit!

By their lights, though, it is a matter of tradition, not a precept of Torah, that men and not women wear the tallit. (Well, except that as my Jewish friends like to say, where you have two Jews, you already have three opinions, so don’t bother chiming in that you know Jews who think otherwise!! 😃 )

As for St. Paul, he said that anyone who wanted to argue about it should “remember that neither we nor the churches of God recognize any other usage” (1 Cor. 11:16) and that “…if it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, it is clear she ought to wear a veil” (1 Cor. 11:6). These days, that is a big “if”. Certainly the Catholic Church, including the Pope, is recognizing another usage, as we speak.

I think it telling that he also said this in another passage of the same letter to the Corinthians: “The fact is that whether you eat or drink–whatever you do–you should do all for the glory of God. Give no offense to Jew or Greek or to the church of God, just as I try to please all in any way I can by seeking, not my own advantage, but that of the many, that they may be saved.” (1 Cor. 10:31)

These ladies posting about wearing the mantilla do it for the glory of God, and for increasing their sense of intimacy with God. That is a beautiful reason to wear it!
