First TLM tomorrow

Hi all,

I want to attend a TLM Mass tomorrow at a church in Milwaukee.

Where would I go to learn a little bit about the TLM so as to not feel out of place/look like I don’t know what I’m doing??

The links above should help. Hopefully the Church will have the red book from the Coalition is support of Ecclesia Dei, or other book which will have the Latin/English for the Mass. You may want to print out the first link to take with you. In the red book, the example of Propers, which the first link is, is not the one for tomorrow.
You may want to sit in the middle or back and sit, stand, kneel, etc. when everyone else does.

No need to be nervous…the TLM belongs to you as to all Catholics, because you have not been before does not mean you don’t have every right to be there. And you are not alone in experiencing it for the first time at this moment in history. Many share your position.

The above advice to sit in the middle or rear is good until you become familiar with it all. Just follow along with everyone else.
 
There are two different schools of thought for your first mass

1- Dont pay too much attention to the missal, just watch whats going on, try and remember from the masses you have been too what will happen.

the other idea…

2- is to follow along in the missal the entire time…

I seem to think that for the first time just listen and see and smell and hear whats going on.

uwwhitewater84: sit at the back and follow the others - the Traditional Mass doesn’t behave in the clockwork manner that the new Mass does - it is much more personal and relaxed - some people cross themselves more often than others, some kneel longer, half stand up at a different time from the other half. If you are going to a new Mass parish that is saying the traditional Mass for the first time you may find the congregation a bit awkward and less free as I describe, but if it is a long term trad parish it is fine.

Oh - you will definitely want to follow the others incidentally - traditional Missals don’t usually include instructions like “sit, stand, kneel, bleat”.

Let us know how it went. I love both forms of the Mass. I seldom get a chance to attend a TLM. If I lived in a Parish that had the TLM, I would do what I could do to be in the choir.
 
I just got home from my first TLM. Wow, what an experience!

I sat in the back so I could see everything that was going on (and to make sure that I could see what other people were doing).

The church was just beautiful with the stained-glass windows, the ceiling, and the tabernacle.

Apart from the liturgy itself, what struck me as cool was that there were a lot of young people like myself who were there.

For some reason, it also felt strangely framiliar.
 
uwwhitewater84: now you know what was stolen from us all those years ago! I discovered the traditional Mass as a lapsed Catholic raised entirely in the new Mass and I simply couldn’t believe it - it was like being in a totally different Church but a TRULY holy Church. I immediately returned to the Church and have been back ever since!

We were denied authentic Catholic dogmatic tradition in the meager days of 1980’s catechesis. JPII initiates the “New Evangelization.” We learned the traditional doctrines and fell in love.

We were denied solemn, sacrificial, undeniably Catholic liturgy (yes, I know, there are exceptions, but most of us got the “Meal on the Table to Celebrate Ourselves”, instead of the “Sacrifice on the Altar to Partake in the Death and Resurrection of Christ”). BXVI initiates “Summorum Pontificum” to open access to the traditional liturgy. Many are falling in love with the Ancient Mass. Why?

Many young Catholics are curious what they have missed out on in the liturgy. Others have learned their faith and know that this liturgy inspired generations of saints and martyrs to holiness. They all know that it is not anything to be afraid of because they have discovered the saving power of the doctrinal tradition - why should the liturgical tradition be any different? Also, there is no longer a stigma with being “against the Council” like there was in the 70’s. The New Mass symbolized everything about the Council, and therefore, the Ancient Mass was not en vogue. That stigma is gone, and we are free to explore our heritage.

I pray that a TLM comes to my home town. It would be well-received.

It really does my heart good to hear about younger people discovering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass as it is meant to be offered… as it was done for hundreds of years before we were almost robbed of it. As my traditional priest said to me when I returned full-time to the TLM, “welcome home.”
