First year of receiving ashes

After about three and a half decades of being a Methodist, and about 8 years of being an atheist, I finally attended an Ash Wednesday service and received ashes. Felt a greater sense of peace than I have from even just being at Mass or spending time in quiet prayer inside the church.

Very alien feeling to me, as I’m used to juggling multiple things all clamoring for attention. Of course, probably doesn’t help that I’m not really articulate on such matters.

Anybody else experience a very deep feeling of peace from getting marked?
 
The first year I received ashes, there was a lady commentating afterward that the cross on my forehead really glowed. That year, Lent became very special and after the Easter vigil it was like I had never celebrated Easter before. “Now it is really Easter!”. I had to wait another church year before I was received into full communion with the Catholic Church.

Yesterday was one of those days when I was more “food fixated” than I am normally during Ash Wednesday. I was hungry and grumpy the whole day and went to Confession before evening mass. During mass I noticed a change when both my brain and body realised that I am forgiven. I wasn’t hungry anymore.
