Hello,

What does it mean when the Scriptures refer to Christ being the Firstborn of God?

Respectfully,
Silencio

In the ancient world “firstborn” was a rank as well as a chronological position. To be the “firstborn” meant authority, inheritance, and power. When the New Testament refers to Jesus as the “firstborn” it is declaring him preeminent among all things. Let us take a look at Colossians 1:15-21
And He is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation. For by Him all things were created…
Notice that Jesus is described as the “firstborn of all creation” who created all things. Obviously Jesus is not a part of creation otherwise all things would not be created by him. The term ‘firstborn’ is being used to show that Jesus has authority and power over creation.
