Chazemataz:
I find it funny that the Roman Catholic Church didn’t even know it’s own holy scripture.

The Bible declared the earth was round long before there was a “Modern Science” or The Church!(Holy Roman type).

Isa 40:22 “It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.”

The Bible has always remained true, it is man’s own interpretation or rather the lack of proper interpretive procedures that are flawed!
Despite the obvious ignorance communicated in your post, I have to say one thing in case some folks missed it. The verse from Isaiah wouldn’t prove or disprove the theory of a “flat earth”. A circle is a two dimentional geometric figure - a circle is flat. To say what you want it to say, it’d have to read "He who sits above the sphere of the earth…"

The Church used to teach that the Earth was flat. Was that an infallible teaching? If so, it obviously presents a major problem.
In all my reading, I have not run accross the flat earth teaching. It might be out there, but I don’t think it was ever taught by the Church as an official teaching. It was not consistently taught by the saints and it was never defined.

The Church never taught that the earth was flat. In fact, there is an ancient icon of Mary holding the Christ Child, from the 4th Century I think, and in His hand He holds a globe representing the world.
This is actually in many icons. They often depict Christ with the globe in his hand.

Okay. I’m going to make an attempt here. All of you are much smarter than I am. Maybe that’s the problem. You’re all too smart and making a mess of a very simple thing.

What does the subject of the earth being round or flat have to do with faith and morals?

The Pope is only speaking infalliably when he is speaking in terms of faith and morals. Nothing else. I think someone else said this in an earlier thread…but no one paid attention.

The Church can have many views on any subject. There are a lot of things that are taught in theory. But when the Pope is sending forth Truth regarding faith and morals…it come from the Holy Spirit therefore-infalliable. I don’t think the earths shape fits this scenario.

I wish the Church new everything. The Church does try to understand everything and the Church will teach based on the knowledge they have obtained. These types of teachings are called theories. All of you brainies out there know this. The Church doesn’t “know” everything. God knows everything.
