When polygamy is of god, it is good. When it is not of god, it is bad. Thus the flds problem. It was not of god.

In the Old Testament, polygamy was practiced and it was from god. It was the same god then, as we have now. He is capable of instituting polygamy if he so desires. Polygamy worked well for many mormons when it was practiced. Many women had the practice confirmed by the holy spirit and some even had a heavenly visitation.

When I lived in Utah, I had a visit by polygamous missionaries. It was very informal but I had only one conversation with them. After watching Big Love I have often thought that polygamy would have been quite nice.

Yes whyme, people can justify anything. I’m sure you could find similar interviews for people in incestuous, adulteress, polyamorous and any number of other immoral lifestyles. Polygamy is nothing but an agreed-upon form of adultery.

So, do you think the LDS will go back to practicing polygamy if (some would say when) it becomes legal in the U.S.? Not just like everyone would be able to have more than one spouse if they wanted, but it actually being a requirement for a man?

That brings something else to mind, and I don’t mean to hijack the thread. Should polygamy be legal, I know the Catholic Church would still forbid it. Which churches do you suppose would allow it? My first thought was the radical fundamentalist ones (there are apparently some nonLDS Christian fundamentalist groups around now) may embrace it (but not require it). But, I would guess the very liberal churches would as well (I’m thinking the ones that already perform gay weddings), as it would be all about “choice” and “who you love”. Any thoughts?

I agree with you, although the more liberal churches would not go for the kind of very misogynistic polygamy that the LDS formerly espoused and the FLDS and other breakaway Mormons still do espouse. The liberal churches would go for polyamory or group marriages. Polyamory is already huge among neo-pagans and basically neither sex holds the power in that arrangement, so it is seen as “woman-positive” or whatever the current PC buzzwords are.

You are wrong why me. I don’t know where you are from, but judging from the geography in the video, I would say these are the Mona, Ut polygamists. You can see Mount Timpanogas in the background and they certainly DO live in a compound. I used to live less than 20 miles from there. Their homes are on the side of a mountain across the freeway from Mt. Nebo.

I grew up an hour away from Colorado City. I don’t know how the Mona commune does things, but people in CC seemed utterly miserable.

I don’t think I can be objective about this, but my personal opinion (based entirely on anecdotal evidence and my own experience) suggests that the religious polygamy is based largely upon the exploitation of women and working people, in favor of a tiny minority which lives at the expense of others. There were a few palatial homes in the center of CC, surrounded by hundreds of people living in squalor.

In theory I think people should do whatever they want. If some poor chump really wants to be nagged by three or four wives, it’s none of my business. It should work the other way too…women ought to have the opportunity to enjoy multiple men bothering them if that’s what they choose. In practice it doesn’t seem to work very well, except on Big Love.

FLDS is very overt about it. Haven’t you been reading about the raid of their temple in Texas which came about because young girls were being given in marriage to 50 year old men? Many were pregnant and had been forced into these marriages – in essence, raped. Their leader, Warren Jeffs, is in prison for enabling child abuse and forced marriages.

I lived in St. George for 3 or 4 years, and I do know that Colorado City (where the people from this ranch in Texas are originally from) is very much about control. I don’t see a lot of difference in the group in Mona. I just think they’re brainwashed.

But it IS a religious issue if the women and children and some of the boys… ever thought of what happens to those lost boys?.. they all believe that this is “righteous”. They are living in fear of a God that doesn’t exist. There is sexual perversion and sin… but it is done in the name of their “god”. It’s not true religion, it is man made dogma that is all about control.

Before I was baptized Mormon the missionaries and one of the families that introduced me asked me if the “prophet” ever declared polygamy as doctrine again, would I follow it. I said I didn’t know and they said that I should think about this because if that’s what the “prophet” says should be done, then we should follow it. No questions asked. I will concede that not all Mormons feel this way, but I’d say that most “faithful” Mormons I knew told me that if that ever came up they would just hope that their husbands weren’t “called” to have more than one wife, but would follow whatever they were asked to by the “prophet”. Boy am I glad I got outta that one!

I believe it does simply because there are soooooooooo many Christians who have no clue about Mormonism… All of it is heresy, but to bring it down to the basics is helpful for a Mormon. IMHO.

I don’t know if they live in a compound or not. I do kmow that they are not FLDS. Their clothes signify a more modern style. And so, it is difficult to make a guess about it. But I would have to say that they seem to be a happy family and the father seems to be a good father. In that family, polygamy seems to work well because they believe that they are doing god’s plan.

If they lived in any sort of compound they would probabilily need special permission to do the video but in this case, it seems to be a family decision.

No, they won’t go back to polygamy. But if the lds church does, it will be because god would have told them to return to it. At least that would be the claim. People cannot say yes or no to it at this moment and of course, many women do say no. But under different circumstances, there would be a more positive reception.

The family in the video does not fit your description. They seem normal and they also seem to work well together in making decisions as a family. Also, the father seems like a great dead and much loved by his kids. In fact, I would take that family over many other families that seem to get marred in quicksand. The polygamous family was wholesome and happy.

I don’t have the citation handy, but the New Testament does have scripture confirming that a man is entitled to only one wife. For the Mormons to re-institute Polygamy would confirm the suspicions of all their detractors that they don’t follow the Bible, only the Book of Mormon. Regardless of what the Mormon Prophet might say, I strongly suspect the rest of Christianity would find such a “revelation” to be further evidence that Mormonism is a non-Christian religion.

The family in the video does not fit your pattern. They seem quite normal with lovely kids. All are adult women who believe in polygamy. I see no sexual perversion. The polygamous groups are not just compound groups. There are independent polygamous groups in Utah.

This was most likely just bantering around for a conversation. It happens sometimes. I would not take it all too seriously. Many things are said to pass time. Most mormons do not believe that polgamy will be reinstated.
