FLDS as true LDS

They would claim that they are following the counsels from god. And the old testament god, sanctioned polygamy. Mormons practiced polygamy during a certain time and place. They will not go back to it. And it would make no difference what other christian groups would say. If it came from god, it would be practiced.
I understand that. It would still be un-Christian.

I don’t know if they live in a compound or not. I do kmow that they are not FLDS. Their clothes signify a more modern style. And so, it is difficult to make a guess about it. But I would have to say that they seem to be a happy family and the father seems to be a good father. In that family, polygamy seems to work well because they believe that they are doing god’s plan.

If they lived in any sort of compound they would probabilily need special permission to do the video but in this case, it ***seems to be ***a family decision.
I’ve taken the liberty of highlighting what seems to be the operative word in whyme’s post.

Most mormons do not believe that polgamy will be reinstated.
a lot of modern mormans nvever heard of morman polygamy. apparently it is something they wish to not talk about.

recenlty I have brought up the subject with a couple of young mormans i know. the first never heard of it. the second had heard of it but said it was because of the shortage of men in the mormona camps, because of the wars.

I asked which wars but this youngseter was unable to identify which ones.

i gather that there is a weak grasp of mormann history among them.

The family in the video does not fit your pattern. They seem quite normal with lovely kids. All are adult women who believe in polygamy. I see no sexual perversion. The polygamous groups are not just compound groups. There are independent polygamous groups in Utah.
Then why the propensity for the old geezers to want the underage girls to “marry.”

The family in the video does not fit your description. They seem normal and they also seem to work well together in making decisions as a family. Also, the father seems like a great dead and much loved by his kids. In fact, I would take that family over many other families that seem to get marred in quicksand. The polygamous family was wholesome and happy.
I began my comments by acknowledging my own inherent bigotry. (That’s what I meant when I said “I don’t think I can be objective…”)

I haven’t seen the video mentioned, but I’m sure there are some functional polygamist families in the world. Good for them. I think everyone should do what he or she wants.

The ones that I grew up in close proximity to did not seem happy, functional or free. Part of the fault for that is upon the heads of my people, the more conventional Mormons in Southern Utah. We’re the people that marginalized, ostracized and scapegoated them into the idea that they should go into seclusion. We sent the cops after them in the 1950s and 1960s, which made them insular, and allowed them to be further exploited by their own tiny ruling class. I acknowledge all that and apologize on behalf of my parents and grandparents for the bigotry and discrimination they suffered.

I haven’t seen the more normal types, except portrayed by fictional characters on HBO. I’m sure they exist and I wish them well. Provided everyone’s of age to choose his or her own lifestyle, and there’s nobody being coerced or mistreated, I support folks doing what they want, and don’t want my tax money used to bother them.

My daughter lives in Utah and has come in contact with polygamous families and their offspring at various large social events. This is entirely anecdotal, of course, but the ones my daughter has met seemed to completely “normal” although it was a bit odd to have several women introduce themselves to her as the mother of her friend John. Apparently, at least in John’s family, they have all the children in common regardless of who actually gave birth to John. As a result he has a “mother” who is about 10 years older than he is, as well as several other “mothers”.

The next generation did not follow the practice, and although they may be Mormon, they are not following the practice of polygamy.

But so what? Whether or not they behave as a normal family is not entirely pertinent. The fact is, no matter how comfortable some people may be with it, polygamy is unarguably un-Christian. The New Testament is quite specific about that. A more authoritative source than anyone’s prophet (i.e., Jesus Christ) has made that quite clear.

Mormons may have put polygamy aside for now, but ALL Mormons believe that it will be practiced in their Celestial Kingdom, whether or not they practice it during their earthly lifetimes. I have even been told that Heavenly Father is the head of a polygamous family in Heaven (or in Kolob or wherever they’re supposed to be.) This belief extends to “regular” LDS Mormons, not just the Fundamentalist types that make all the news. If a Mormon is honest with you, and they know their religion, you can confirm this with them.

I sure don’t mind my taxes going to stop these crimes. We have an age of informed consent for a reason. You just aren’t allowed to coerce teenagers into sex or pimp out your children.

Give us chapter and verse in the OT where God “sanctioned polygamy”. Just because the bible reports that someone did something, that doesn’t mean that God commanded or sanctioned it.

So now you are saying that they might live in a compound?

Why then did you say in your other post
Here is an interview with a polygamous family. They are not the compound types but independent polygamous (mormons):
It is quite nice, really. Sometimes I wonder what if??
They do indeed live in a compound. I’ve seen it. you again are wrong.

Um HELLO??? You don’t want your taxes to go to stop these crimes.

Did you know that your taxes go to many of these “families” because only one legal wife can be declared and the other wives and children typically collect welfare from the federal government?

Steph ~ re-read the what the other poster wrote, it was that they did not mind their taxes being used to stop these crimes. Is your “um hello” meant to indicate you disagree that our taxes should be used to stop these practices? Or did you just read the previous poster’s comment too quickly?

The lack of men thing is a cursory answer that some Mormons are given. It is an answer without any basis in fact. Every US census from 1850-1900 (relevant years where polygamy was practiced) lists more males then females in Utah. Making it more likely that polygamy was a cause of increased bachelorhood.

That lack of women for women shows in the fact that Mormon girls were being married off younger. The average age for a 2nd wife was 17 years old, and her husband’s age was 30. The average age for a woman getting married in the US was 22 years old. In other words, the men were taking up a girl as a wife as soon as she was old enough to marry off.

The FLDS polygamists face the same issue today. It is why the Lost Boys exist. And it is why child brides exist. The men in this cult are required to have three wives. Demographically speaking, this is not possible without marrying off girls when they are very young, and kicking out the boys before they start taking the limited availability of girls.

They believe this is what god demands of them. So according to some, we should all just sit back and let this foolishness exist and prosper.

I think not. God does not call us to sit back and observe suffering and evil.

Actually, that’s not what I wrote at all. You should take your own sage advice and respond only when you can grasp the meaning of the message. That way you’ll be able to contribute something coherent.

Best,

LaMar

LaMar,

I wasn’t referring to your post. And I resent your tone which seems quite condescending. You are welcome here as a guest, but you are not welcome to be rude to the rest of us.

I know a young mormon missionary who keeps having himself sealed to as many young ladies as he can for plural marriages in the afterlife.

I wasn’t responding to you. If you want a private conversation, use the PM feature. Everything here is fair game.

HELLO! Yes I do. I am proud of the way the local sheriff and the rangers handled the cases of child sexual abuse.
Sorry pnewton. Actually I quoted your post instead of LaMar’s post, which was the one I should have quoted. My bad. 🤷

You’re right MelanieAnne. I quoted pnewton instead of LaMar’s as I intended

Of course I agree that our taxes should be used to help these women and children. I work along with many former Mormons to do just that.
