Flesh and Blood

I’m in a Theology class at college and a group member wants to know where in the bible does it say that the host we receive on Sunday is really the flesh and blood of Jesus. I think he is a reformist Christian and thus he is solo scriptura.

When Our LORD said “Take and eat, THIS IS, MY BODY, DO THIS IN REMEMBERANCE OF ME”- Note, Our LORD didnt say “this is a symbol of MY BODY”, but “This IS, THIS IS, MY BODY”.

Also, “Unless You eat of the Flesh of the SON OF MAN, and DRINK HIS BLOOD, YOU shall have no life within you”-Pretty dramatic stuff

Also, ask him, if Our LORD was speaking symbolicly, then why would HE have been willing to lose so many Apostles over the above statement? Why wouldnt HE have just said “No wait, come back, I was speaking symbolicly”???

Our LORD also said “I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE”, also, “he who EATS MY FLESH AND DRINKS MY BLOOD abides in me, and I in him”

How would he refute these??

Also, the 1st generation Church Fathers also believed Jesus at His Words:

St. Ignatius, who received his Catechism from the Apostle John wrote - “They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer, because they confess not the Eucharist to be the flesh of our Saviour Jesus Christ, which suffered for our sins, and which the Father, of His goodness, raised up again.” Ignatius of Antioch, Epistle to Smyrnaeans, 7,1 (c. A.D. 110).

I trust that Jesus meant exactly what He said about the Eucharist for fear that if he were only speaking metaphorically about His body then He was speaking only metaphorically about my salvation.

Just wanted to make a slight correction mymamamary; it was disciples and not apostles who left Him. Only the 12 were called apostles, and none of them left after the teaching in John 6.

I am waiting for him to come back with a response. I hope it goes well, this is an area that I would like to get better at.
