I was just thinking to myself when Mary and Joseph fled to Egypt it is very safe to say that, that journey was necessary but also at the same time it would have been hard.
This is just a random guess but I would guess it could have taken them 3-4 weeks also because from bethlahem to the place they went to. in Egypt would have been hundreds of miles. This is just a guess because we obviously don’t know the actual time it took.

There were two major highways or trade routes through the area.

The Via Maris (Way of the Sea, blue on the map) followed the coast from Heliopolis in Egypt to the area West of the Sea of Galille where it then headed inland to Damascus.

The King’s Highway (red on the map) went from Egypt, crossed the Sinai Desert and then followed the East bank of the Jordan river northward. One could travel the King’s Highway all the way to the Euphrates River in what is now Iraq.

these were two of the most fought after trade routes in all history. Both were heavily traveled. Jerusalem to Heliopolis via the Kings’ Highway is about 600 miles.

Joseph would have likely hired transportation, passage on a cart or similar. They would have likely traveled with a caravan which included some kind of armed protection. The idea of three lonely travelers crossing the empty desert in the middle of the night isn’t very likely.

The trip still would have been hard because of the great distances and the desert heat during the day.

I suppose, typically, that is how artists depicted them.

However I am sure it was a great inconvenience and sacrifice. It is one of the seven sorrows depicted of Mary. I would think her sorrow and prayers were very much aimed at the souls of those involved in such malice

What the Gospels called Egypt is probably the region we call Gaza.

I wasnt trying to say as if you thought it was easy I was just trying to repeat myself

It is also possible that they traveled during the early morning and late afternoon to avoid the worst of the heat and then set up shelters or found shelters to stay out of the sun.

Still not an easy trip, but perhaps one way to mitigate some of its harshness.
