Fluorescent Tube Lights: Proper disposal

Does anyone know the proper way to dispose of burned out fluorescent tube lights? I overheard someone say that they have to be handled a certain way. Like how? Aside from being glass… are they dangerous in some other way?

Google “household hazardous waste” your town/city. This will tell you where you dispose of them in your town. Sometimes the store where you bought them will take them back for disposal.

Each one contains a small amount of mercury, so you have to dispose of them as hazardous waste.

Well, just google “fluorescent bulb breaking clean up”. Vaporized mercury floating through your home when one breaks. :eek: And let me tell you…those CF bulbs can shatter into a million little fragments. I once had once shatter on my tile floor - it sent minute shards up the carpeted steps, into the living room, across the tiles…it was horrible.
 
We’ve got two of them. One is in the kitchen (9 ft. ceiling; 5 ft. 3 in. tall resident 😃 ) and the other is in a closet.

I’m going to see about having the ceiling one replaced, with an easier to reach… more standard kind of ceiling fixture. Maybe the light won’t be as bright. But I had no idea these things were so potentially lethal.

I’m scared now! (But I’m glad you guys knew! Cause I sure didn’t! I don’t want these things in the house any more!).
 
I will not talk about those old fashioned long “Neon” tubes, b/c I don’t know for sure whether they contain anything hazardous. My guess is they are not hazardous.

The CF (compact fluorescent, cold fluorescent) light tubes, which are used to replace incandescent bulbs, contain 30-50 mg mercury (Hg) each. Hg is BAD BAD BAD. Also, laptop computers mostly contain a CF backlight with Hg also called CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent light) , but the newer and more expensive laptops have instead a “LED backlight” display which is more pleasant on the eyes and does not contain toxic Hg. If you have a CF bulb to dispose, first of all put it into a ziplock bag and that ziplock bag into a second ziplock bag, so that you will not spill Hg in case that the bulb breakes. Both such bulbs and laptop computers with CCFL should be disposed of as hazardous waste.

I first learned about the Hg problem with CF bulbs on the www.wnd.com website (WorldNetDaily), I didn’t even know that they contained Hg! Wnd has several detailed articles about, go to their website and search the archives. I am a chemist and pharmacist, I found the information given there scientifically accurate.

If you break such a bulb over some hard surface such as tiles, there’s an EPA recommended procedure to clean it up, but I don’t know where to find it online. Maybe EPA website? However I can tell this, based on the fact that old thermometers with Hg have always been a problem in chemical laboratories (and households): go and get fine powdered sulphur, which is a yellow substance used to treat wine (I guess wineries sell it, maybe pharmacies have it too). Sprinkle sulphur powder over the surface abundantly; using rubber gloves and a small mop, clean it up some 15-30 minutes later. Hg loves to react with the yellow sulphur and forms a black product of mercury sulphide (HgS) which is no longer hazardous. This method can also be used to clean up larger amounts (grams instead of milligrams) of Hg spilled from thermometers or old-fashioned electric switches found in the temperature control boxes of air conditioners. If you have larger amounts of Hg, visible liquid drops of it, you have to sprinkle it abundantly with sulphur and keep mixing the yellow sulphur powder with the silver-colored drops of mercury until the silver drops disappear and are transformed into black, amorphous-looking mercury sulphide (HgS) powder. I would clean up the sulphur powder which contains some HgS product into two layers of ziplock bags and dispose of as hazardous waste - just in case that it still contains trace amounts of unreacted Hg.

If you break your CF bulb over a carpet, you are out of luck. According to the wnd.com article, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) says that you will have to replace that part of the carpet. Although, I frankly don’t understand why don’t they recommend covering the area with a lot of finely powdered sulphur and cleaning it up later with a vacuum cleaner. If you try to clean it up simply with a vacuum cleaner (without using sulphur powder), it will not work because Hg is an extremely dense, heavy liquid that also generates vapors (it is partially vaporized). You will clean up SOME OF IT with the vacuum cleaner, meaning that the whole vacuum cleaner gets contaminated and should be disposed of. Still, most of the Hg will not be picked up, the small heavy droplets will stay on the carpet. Some of the Hg vapors will get air-borne by the vacuum cleaner’s air stream, and the levels of air-borne Hg in the area above the carpet will reach up to 500 times the maximum levels permitted by EPA. Yes, it’s a nightmare. Maybe that’s why EPA simply says to cut out and replace that piece of the carpet. However, the first thing I would do, even before reaching for the utility knife to cut the carpet, is this: I would abundantly sprinkle the carpet with sulphur powder. That will do a good job reacting with any Hg it comes into contact with, and minimize the amount of Hg that gets vaporized above the carpet. After cutting out the carpet, I would sprinkle the hard surface beneath it with powdered sulphur and clean it up 15-30 min later - it cannot hurt and would remove any residual spilled Hg.

Why is Hg so bad? It attacks the neurons (brain, nerves), and it is much more toxic to small children. It’s effects are somewhat similar to lead (Pb) which was banned from gasoline. Imagine your toddler or pets playing in the area where Hg was spilled on the carpet - you really want to avoid that. Since toddlers crawl on the carpet and breath in the air immediately above the carpet, they would be exposed to Hg vapors at levels hundreds of times larger than the maximum level permitted by EPA. I’m not a doctor and don’t know exactly how a Hg intoxication manifests itself, but the neurotoxic effect is irreversible, cumulative, and it can cause mental dementia, I know this. There was an infamous Hg intoxication case in Japan, physically deformed and demented children were born. Btw, I guess pregnant women should avoid Hg.

The CF bulbs look like an unsolved issue. They save energy, but are toxic. What if you rent your apartment, and if the previous tenant broke a CF bulb on the carpet? You will never know it. I sincerely hope one bulb is not enough to cause lasting damage to a toddler, but I don’t really know. Also, the effect is cumulative meaning that the longer the exposure, the more broken bulbs, the worse the health damage becomes.

There was a funny bumper sticker available from wnd.com, it showed an incandescent bulb and a CF bulb and it said, “I’m pro-choice on lightbulbs.” Initially I thought that this was only a humorous pro-life message. I was wrong. It can be taken that way, but it’s also about the incandescent bulbs - because Congress wants to ban the incandescent bulbs in 2010, forcing all of us to transition to the energy-efficient (and toxic) CF bulbs. Has Al Gore had a hand in this?? :rolleyes:

Then you should know that exposure to the volume of mercury in a cf bulb is not much of a threat. Elemental mercury is much more of a chronic healt threat than it is an acute health threat. While a broken fluorescent bulb needs to be handled with care and cleaned up promptly, the mercury that is released is in reality not much of a health threat.

Please don’t panic! The fluorescent bulbs you have in your house are not a threat to your or your family’s health. They have to be disposed of as hazardous waste simply because of the presence of mercury. The volume of mercury and the amount of time that you would be exposed to the mercury, should you break a bulb, is not enough to create negative health threats. Just clean it up if you break one. In short, the tiny amount of mercury in a compact fluorescent light is not going to hurt anyone. Elemental mercury is relatively safe compared to mercury compounds such as dimethyl mercury, which are very poisonous. (The scares regarding mercury in fish are related to dimethyl mercury, which is not the same as the elemental mercury found in light bulbs.)

The amount of mercury found in these bulbs is extremely tiny – you would have to throw away over 100 light bulbs to equal the amount of mercury found in ONE old-fashioned mercury thermometer!

Home Depot stores accept these bulbs for recycling. If you can’t find a way to recycle them, just throw them in the trash, wrapping them to prevent them from breaking in your house.

Yes, probably there is no reason to panic for a broken bulb. And I just remembered, gold diggers used to work a lot with mercury, using it to extract (amalgamate) the gold. Also, amalgam (=mercury alloy) fillings have been used by dental doctors before, but it seems to me they are no longer used.

And still, I feel apprehensive about mercury (Hg). Won’t we end up similar to lead (Pb) and asbestos? Or even as the trans fats in foods, which are not categorically banned because the food industry is lobbying against banning them, for financial reasons, even though it is becoming ever clearer that trans fats are really unhealthy? Lead was pemitted in gasoline and paints, but it was banned later. I wish a dental doctor could tell us whether amalgam fillings have been actually banned or only replaced because modern polymer fillings are better. In chemical laboratories, Hg thermometers are not categorically banned, but replaced whenever possible. I think Hg thermometers for body temperature are banned. I know, if I would have toddlers, I wouldn’t take chances, even if the fears are overdone. I would much rather err on the safe side than exposing them even to small quantities of Hg and possibly regretting it later. As I understand it, the biggest problem could be caused by spills on the carpet that are not cleaned up adequately. If any Hg stays there, I don’t want my toddler crawling over that carpet and breathing in that mercury.

The EPA information that I can find says absolutely nothing about replacing your carpet. What is their source?

I’ve read enough poorly researched and sensationalistic stories on wnd.com that I don’t trust anything coming from them anymore. (The last time I read that website, in mid-2005, they were claiming that terrorists were about to detonate dozens of nuclear bombs around the US).

Yes, that is correct. Mercury has long been used in gold mining and I believe it still is in some areas.

Well, lead possibly but asbestos is a completely different issue. Both lead and mercury are metals.

While acute toxicity is possible, you would have to either ingest one of the more dangerous mercury compounds or inhale a really large dose of the vapor. Otherwise, as long as you are not exposed to it over a prolonged time, there is a very low risk of problems.

You mentioned gold mining. Miners that used mercury to extract gold developed serious problems after long term exposure. Same with felt hats during the 1800’s. The process that made the felt used mercury (mercury chloride, I think) and the workers that used that method developed mercury poisoning. That is where the term “mad as a hatter” or “mad hatter” comes from.

A few facts and thoughts:

-I just researched amalgam tooth fillings. They are still widely used, although there are some health concerns of nervous system and kidney damage, especially to children and pregnant women. Their use was restricted in some European countries. Overall, the issue is controversial.

-Thiomersal (organic mercury compound preservative) in vaccines. Controversial. It was phased out of vaccines in USA and EU as a precautionary measure. Concerns about nervous system and kidney damage, but not proven.

-breathing vapors of mercury was used as a treatment for syphilis before the discovery of salvarsan (arsenium organic compound)

-the EPA does not say replacing the carpet if a bulb is broken, only if a thermometer is broken. I estimate a thermometer would contain the Hg equivalent of 20 CF light bulbs (1 gram vs. 50 mg)

-wnd was inaccurate in this. Mentioning wnd is a red herring and their stories are often inaccurate.

-still, I don’t understand, why don’t manufacturers stick a warning label on their CF bulb products, that they contain mercury? Laptop manufacturers do have such a warning label. Why did I have to learn about Hg in CF bulbs from wnd?

-while we don’t use and break lots of Hg thermometers, our adoption and widespread use of CF bulbs could lead to spilling more Hg, even if each bulb contains 20-fold less Hg than a thermometer

-one thing still impressed me in the wnd story and I think they did a good job mentioning it. If Hg is spilled on the carpet and not properly cleaned up, it will stay there forever. If my toddler keeps crawling over that carpet and breathes in the Hg vapors for the next year or so until he learns to walk, he will be exposed to Hg vapors on the long term (chronic exposure, cumulative effect). I think that’s an important point.

Sorry I somehow missed Ack’s estimate that 1 thermometer could contain the equivalent of more than 100 bulbs rather than 20 bulbs. One CF bulb contains 30-50 mg; I guess then a thermometer contains grams (100 microliter=2 grams).

I think I would not replace the carpet after one bulb, since the EPA does not call for it. However, I would sprinkle it with sulfur powder. Actually I won’t use CF bulbs over a carpet. Seems like less hassle to me. I don’t have children but do not want to risk soiling my carpet with Hg. What if the buyer of my apartment has toddlers? I will go beyond what EPA asks for.

According to this EPA site, a CF bulb only contains 5mg of mercury, while a thermometer contains about 500mg.

The United States EPA recommends sprinkling the carpet with sulfur for a moderate-size mercury spill (like a thermometer), but not for a small spill, like from a CF bulb.

The biggest household mercury threat is in mercury tilt sensors, like those found in mechanical furnace thermostats or sump pumps. These switches contain about 3 grams of mercury, or as much as in 600 compact fluorescent light bulbs. If you broke one of those, I would be worried.

Regarding warning labels, CF bulb packaging that I’ve seen does have a warning message, but it is very small and only written on the packaging.
