Flying our dog

I flew with a Chesapeake Bay retriever pup (7-8 weeks old). I did not tranquilize her. And the gentleman sitting next to me in flight didn’t notice until I pulled her crate out from under my feet and opened it up to check on her as we were deboarding.

I did double check with the airline at the airport about a week prior to traveling if the crate and her could fly in the cabin. No problems

I also made one change over and that worked out very well too.

(Took her to the tiled restroom to potty… I cleaned it up of course) I couldn’t think of anywhere else to take her?

If we flew with our Jack Russell under the seat, I think that passengers and crew would vote us off the plane pretty quickly. Bark bark bark…bark bark bark. She’d want to smell everything and everyone, and it wouldn’t be a pleasant trip.

I do know there are pads one can buy to put on a floor in a doggy emergency…can’t imagine what else one could do in transit, as you certainly can’t take the dog outside these days without MAJOR security drama.

A friend of mine used to work as a cabin attendant at a major airline. According to her, the cargo hold is typically not pressurized or heated unless there is a live animal being shipped. Sadly, on occasions when things are running late and they are trying to get away from the gate quickly, they sometimes forget that someone’s pet is in there.

They refer to the result as a “Puppy Popsicle.”

My parents dog did something similar, but in our own basement! Had a huge, new, sturdy kennel… one of those that is mostly hard plastic with a wire grate door and a small wire “window” on each side. He was normally an outside dog but we brought him in during a nasty storm. Overnight he ended up chewing (somehow) through the wire grate window and bending the bars and had his head stuck. We have no idea how he did it but it goes to show that when a dog wants out he wants out now!

So, estebob, I am assuming your dog is familiar with a kennel? But having never flown before you can’t be sure how he will react.… I don’t think i saw a mention of breed type?

So is he just a bit to big to fly in the cabin? I have a 130lb Bouvier so if we ever need to fly him he would have to go in cargo for sure! Unless of course we bought a seat for him and said he was just a really furry person
