The more I hear about Dawkins’ logic, the more intellectually vapid I think he is.
Please then prove him wrong. The more I hear about Dawkins’ logic, the more intellectually vapid I think he is.
As John Henry Cardinal Newman said: 1000 difficulties do not make one doubtYou might want to consider the fact that the eyewitnesses didn’t just sit around and wait till anyone who might contradict their story died before speaking out; there is plenty of evidence that they spoke out and, before their martyrdom, convinced a lot of other people of the truth of their “wild story”.
But ultimately, if you decide you can’t believe it based on second-hand evidence, you’ll either have to accept the evidence as presented by someone whose opinion you trust in other matters - or, as many of us here have done, go through a bout of atheism.
It’s not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes it helps to clear out all the brush and plant some fresh seeds.![]()
Well I disallowed it because there have been martyrs in many religions.Hi Pete;
If I can ask, what is the reason for disallowing the witness of those who saw the risen Jesus and suffered martyrdom rather than recant their witness?
I would agree that just because one person saw something that does not necessarily make that person’s conclusion the truth. And it may also be the case that a person is deluded into believing what they really want to believe. Yet, what is striking about the tesimony of the Apostles is that ALL of them suffered martyrdom without betraying their message that Christ rose from the dead. This - to my understanding - enhances their credibility as witnesses to an interaction with a person they all knew to be Jesus - after many many people witnessed His death.
To discount these witnesses without some argument other than “people can be mistaken” is, to me, the sign of a person who has already made up their mind not to believe… contrary to the testimony of the witnesses.
So, I’m just curious to know what rationale was give to you by the person who dismisses these witnesses to the event in question. It may give me some insight on how to further respond to your question.
Peace,
-Robert
Of course - I am a Catholic, my question is why take anything on faith?Pete,
Just out of curiosity, do you take anything on faith?
Peace
Tim
Because there are things that cannot be explained by reason. Miracles do not fit within reason. If we require reason we are limiting our faith to the realm of the natural and we exclude the supernatural. That isn’t faith. That is science.Of course - I am a Catholic, my question is why take anything on faith?
Why is reason not sufficient?
Because not all truth is apprehended by reason. Some truth can only be provided by revelation - which is only accessible by faith.Of course - I am a Catholic, my question is why take anything on faith?

Are you saying that the world cannot be explained without faith? Could you provide an example?Because not all truth is apprehended by reason. Some truth can only be provided by revelation - which is only accessible by faith.
I think you might have misunderstood, have you read my other posts?Because there are things that cannot be explained by reason. Miracles do not fit within reason. Yes I have. What have I misunderstood? I was replying to your post #27.I think you might have misunderstood, have you read my other posts?
Why not the trinity?Great this is what I was looking for. Could you provide an example?
I do not mean things like the Trinity because this is purely faith I mean something in the world that cannot be understood without faith.
and36 "Our holy mother, the Church, holds and teaches that God, the first principle and last end of all things, can be known with certainty from the created world by the natural light of human reason."11
11 Vatican Council I, Dei Filius 2: DS 3004 cf. 3026; Vatican Council II, Dei Verbum 6.
The world cannot understand the Trinity without revelation.38 This is why man stands in need of being enlightened by God’s revelation, not only about those things that exceed his understanding, but also “about those religious and moral truths which of themselves are not beyond the grasp of human reason, so that even in the present condition of the human race, they can be known by all men with ease, with firm certainty and with no admixture of error”. 14
14 Pius XII, Humani generis 561: DS 3876; cf. Dei Filius 2: DS 3005; DV 6; St. Thomas Aquinas, S Thess I, I, I.
But why accept faith? You are using faith as an example of why one should accept faith. Why not the trinity?
From the CCCand
The world cannot understand the Trinity without revelation.
Woops didn’t see that part. Still, I’m curious as to why you want us to exclude such answers? That’s one major point that sets the flying spaghetti monster apart from Jesus(Please do not give reasons such as the disciples held that what they saw was true even during martyrdom)
Because of the existence of brainwashed cults that believe their leader is God.Woops didn’t see that part. Still, I’m curious as to why you want us to exclude such answers? That’s one major point that sets the flying spaghetti monster apart from Jesus![]()
There is no credible account of the existence of the FSM. Nor are there credible accounts of the existence of unicorns. Both are mythical creatures, acknowledged as such. How does this differ from the reason that one should not believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster (Richard Dawking’s invention) or invisible unicorns?
So you want us to provide proof without us being able to provide proof.Firstly I should say that I am a Catholic however I have been having trouble with this question:
Why should someone believe Jesus rose from the grave? (Please do not give reasons such as the disciples held that what they saw was true even during martyrdom)
How does this differ from the reason that one should not believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster (Richard Dawking’s invention) or invisible unicorns?
What about Islam? And all the other religions that have undergone persecution? So you want us to provide proof without us being able to provide proof.
This is not logical. Clearly the proof of Christ’s resurrection lies in the fact that Christianity grew in spite of persecutions specifically because people saw that Christ rose from the dead and were willing to die for it.
