A LOT of people argue that the Church todays is too free with declarations of nullity. I used to think so too. On further review, I think she’s actually too free with handing out the “appearance” of sacramental marriage. If a priest can clearly identify an impediment to marriage, there is no way that he in good conscience allow those two to fool themselves into thinking they are sacramentally married. Truth matters.

But I don’t think enough effort is put into this area. Certainly nowhere near the effort that is put into examining applications for annullment. Why is that? Why does it appear that the Church cares more for the souls of people AFTER they’ve attempted and failed to marry than before? Perhaps the answer lies in the tricky nature of being a pastor. Too easy to give people what they THINK they want rather than saying NO when it is necessary.
